Ways I’ve Improved my Writing Skills When I initially began my English 28 class I was not the finest writer. I’m still not perfect, but I have improved a lot. At the very beginning of the semester, I didn’t consider myself a writer. I never enjoyed writing essays because I knew I wasn’t very good at them. I always made multiple errors and would fail to correct them because I wasn’t aware of how to. For example, I didn’t know how to fix a comma splice. I always became confused as to where I had to put the commas; not knowing where to place the commas would cause me to create comma splices. As you can see from my first essay there are many comma splices. At the start of my English 28 class I had no idea how to fix comma splices or even knew what they were. As I studied more and attended every class, I discovered what they were and how to fix them. I realized that there is more than one way to fix them. For example, I can place a comma before a word such as “but” to fix it, replace the comma with a semicolon, or simply a period. …show more content…

I would always put extra unnecessary words which would create a run-on sentence. I still make this mistake, but not as much as I previously would. I’ve learned it’s best to utilize fewer words to keep the reader interested; using additional words will cause my sentences to be long and boring. Also, I’ve learned that for my essays to sound more formal I need to apply more sophisticated vocabulary. From my first essay you’re able to see that I had poor word choice. I still struggle with finding stronger vocabulary, but if you take a look at my most recent essay you will discover that I have improved.
