I woke up to the bright sun in my eyes. I hopped up with so much excitement, hoping and praying that rain was not in the forecast today. I ran around the house and woke everybody up screaming, “TODAY IS THE DAY!”. I waited almost a life time for this day, PROM. In my head, I planned on making nothing but good memories. My friends and I was going to party until the sun came up. After losing a friend, I realized too much partying isn’t always fun. I got myself together and went to my hair, nail, and make-up appointment to get beautified. As the day went on the time got closer. As young girl with big dreams I imagined my senior year of high school to be one of the best years of my life. I imagined going to homecoming with all of my friends, being the captain of the varsity soccer and cheerleading teams, going to Friday night football games, going to Prom with my perfect date, and going on a senior trip with all of my best friends. I never imagined my senior year to be the way that it is. I am the new kid.
People say high school is supposed to be the golden years of your life. I don’t know what else in life is to come; however, my philosophy is to live in the moment and make the life you’re living in the present worthwhile into the future, not only for you but for those who surround you. I live my life participating in our community and getting involved in our school. The activities, and the people I’ve formed relationships with, are what have formed me into the person I am today. The person I am today is not perfect, but I have learned from the mistakes I’ve made.
The big day was finally here! I woke up around four in the morning to get my hair and makeup done. I had stayed in Fort Worth at my aunt’s house, since the lady doing my hair lived closed to her. So already it starts to go bad. The lady called in saying she couldn’t make it because her car broke down, so of course I start freaking out. I needed my hair and makeup done a.s.a.p. so I could be on my way home to Jacksboro. My aunt started to call some people she knew and I waited impatiently starting to do my own make up. Because of some of the circumstances that make me who I am, it is hard to say I have any one definitive home. Instead, I have had two true homes, ever since I was a young child. What makes this even more of a conundrum is that my homes have always had little in common, even though they are only a few hundred miles apart. Between the big city of Houston, Texas, and the small town of Burns Flat, Oklahoma, I have grown up in two very different towns that relate to one another only in the sense that they have both raised me.
It’s September of 2009, the semi-truck is sitting outside with all of our belongings in it, like an airplane waiting to take us away. Today is gloomy and raining as usual, but I know I’m going to miss it. The sun has started going down; we all get into the vehicles we’re designated. Me, my Dad, and Jade our Boxer into the truck, Mom Jaycee and the other animals into the car, and my Aunt Tina and Grandma into their suburban. It’s bitter sweet, I am so excited to go to a new city, new state, new everything, but I’m leaving behind everyone I grew up with. My closest friends who thought I was funny, not weird. Most people would say that prom is one of the most anticipated events that seniors in high school look forward to. However, I never gave much thought about going to prom mostly due to the fact that I was really shy and unconfident. Still, my friends would constantly ask whether or not I was going to attend prom. I would always tell them “I don’t know” every time, but since it was my senior year, my friends pressured me with guilt, saying that I would regret not going to our final high school dance. After constant thinking and being jealous of all the prom proposals that were happening, I decided I would try to get out of my comfort zone and go to prom.
The community that I had been living here for the past couple of years is Woodside. Woodside is my home where there are a lot of varieties of things to do with people’s lives. In fact, it accommodate how people in this community interact with others such as going to varieties of stores, enjoying themselves at the park and etc. The best view point of my community that I like to talk about is the park and the good foundation of stores that are provided in this community.
I can almost remember that day like it was yesterday, I awoke like on any other school day. It was a gorgeous May morning, the rays of sun flittered through my miniblinds blinding me as if I hadn’t seen light in days. I sluggishly dragged my limp body out of my warm bed, retiring to the bathroom to perform my normal morning rituals shower, shave, brush my teeth, get dressed, do my hair, and all the other regulars. As I looked at myself while combing my hair, it hit me like a speeding express train, I was about to graduate. I couldn’t help but smile, but at the same time I felt like a part of me was drifting away. A tear came to my eye as I realized what was about to happen to me.
Graduation is an exciting time in a person’s life, especially a high school graduation. When I think of family and friends gathering together to celebrate a joyous occasion, I feel I accomplished my strongest goal. It never occurred to me that graduation would be the end of my youth and the start of adulthood. Graduating from high school was an influential event that gave me an altered outlook on my existence. Life before graduation, preparing for graduation day, and commencement day overwhelmed me for reality.
It was one of the most exciting and nerve racking days of our lives. Although we were finally leaving high school, the feeling of being unsure didn’t go away. The whole day was full of practicing for the big moment when the entire class graduated on to a new beginning. All the girls wore shiny bright red robes and the guys were dressed in a shiny navy blue. Standing there, I had no idea what to expect. Some things I were aware of, my friends were leaving and we wouldn’t be the same friends anymore. My role was that of being so aware of the future that I was too shocked to soak in the present; being a pessimist was my main goal and everything I was sure of became true.
The entire senior class all three hundred plus of us in alignment for the cupid shuffle. At this time I took time to admire all of my friends dresses. Such vivid colors, reds, blues, whites, blacks, pinks, yellows, and even oranges. It was an incredible view, but the song was begining and i had to get ready. I could feel my flats sliding on the dance floor so I quickly took them off and jumped back in my spot. We were all moving as a group right, right, right right, left, left, left, left, kick, kick, kick, kick, and then walk it out and turn. With each step it was more fun I looked to my date, I could see the glisten in his blue eyes. The smell of his cologne still lingering on my dress. The taste of his lips now as they met mine. I hear nothing but silence, I can feel the vibrations on the floor from the music but it is as if the world was standing still. It is a perfect moment one that will vividly live in my thoughts for as long as I live. As the dance comes to an end we hug our friends and say our goodbyes. I opened my eyes at around 9:00 a.m.; I could not imagine that today was my graduation day. I was so excited to get ready for the day I had dreamt of for twelve years. I called my cousin Sandra to remind her to do my makeup because she is a makeup artist. I told her that I needed it to be flawless because I wanted this day to be complete in everyway. I took a shower to get ready for the hair salon because I was going to dye my hair red for the first time. I wanted a simple hairstyle; straight on top with curls at the bottom.
Once upon a time, I saw the world like I thought everyone should see it, the way I thought the world should be. I saw a place where there were endless trials, where you could try again and again, to do the things that you really meant to do. But it was Jeffy that changed all of that for me. If you break a pencil in half, no matter how much tape you try to put on it, it'll never be the same pencil again. Second chances were always second chances. No matter what you did the next time, the first time would always be there, and you could never erase that. There were so many pencils that I never meant to break, so many things I wish I had never said, wish I had never done. Most of them were small, little things, things that you could try to glue back together, and that would be good enough. Some of them were different though, when you broke the pencil, the lead inside it fell out, and broke too, so that no matter which way you tried to arrange it, they would never fit together and become whole again. Jeff would have thought so too. For he was the one that made me see what the world really was. He made the world into a fairy tale, but only where your happy endings were what you had to make, what you had to become to write the words, happily ever after. But ever since I was three, I remember wishing I knew what the real story was.
Graduation: the last day that I would unwillingly set foot on the fields of Horizon High School. I could feel my heart beating out of my chest, and tried so hard to keep my feet moving one after the other in order to maintain my perfect stature. After the two hour wait of opening speeches, class songs, and the calling off of the five hundred plus names that were in front of me, it was finally my turn. As my row stood up and we walked towards the stage it had set in at last, this is it, I am done. My high school career ended on that night, but it didn’t close the book that is my life, it only started a new chapter, and with it came a whole slue of uncertainties.
