It was the summer of 1944 a year that would change my life. The dream I was having was abruptly interrupted by the loud voice of my mom yelling “Amante wake up!” Today was the day we were moving from Venice Italy to the great city of New York. There had been many bombing throughout Italy and we decided to pack up and live the American dream. I had been waiting for this day for years I had seen pictures and heard about America’s beauty but I couldn’t wait to see it in real life. The whole Dinardo family was excited to go, including me and my little sister Angelina. Angelina was only 8 years old. We’re seven years apart. She had golden blonde hair the color of honey and freckles dotted across her face. My dad walked excitedly into my room telling me that …show more content…
I quickly devoured it when I thought no one was looking. When I walked back to my cabin. My dad was sitting inside. Then when I went back in the cabin my dad scolded me and hit me for taking the bread, yelling furiously at me. You could have gotten us in lots of trouble he exclaimed. He then apologized and told me not to do it again. What have I come too I thought to myself.
It was a warm rainy June night the humidity was high which made it even harder to breathe on the crammed boat. My family was asleep on the constantly rocking boat suddenly the boat shook, but my family was still fast asleep. I couldn’t seem to fall asleep so I got up and stepped out on the cold wet steel boats upper deck to get some air. When I got outside I realized that it was pouring bucket sized rain. I saw increasingly large waves crash furiously against the lower deck. Hard water droplets pelted my face, I could taste the salt water in my mouth from the spray of the ocean. Suddenly A massive wave slammed hard against the ship and almost swallowed the boat. Wind gusts started kicking up. I held onto the rail grasping it as if it were my prized possession. Suddenly I was blown
Every American has a different definition of the American Dream, and what has been at the root of the American Dream differs between each individual. A popular myth about the American Dream is that every citizen has an equal chance to achieve success and wealth with ease. An immigrant may have a different idea of what the American Dream means to them, whereas an American that was born in the states may not entirely see it in the same light. The same goes for Americans who had to claim refugee status to enter the country and for those who became Americans through forced migration. Some Americans may not believe the American Dream is tangible, while others may think the American Dream is denied to them and actively
I was one of the first people to jump into my inflatable duckie, but I was one of the last to get on the river. Once I launched into the river I looked all around me to see the shores covered in pointy trees that were trying to impale anyone who dared go near them. Out of nowhere I hit a rock under the waves, but it was too late and I lost all control of my boat and fell face first into the river. After hitting the water I realized really how cold and dark the water was I started to try to swim to the surface, but it felt like I had cinder blocks attached to my feet weighing me down. SPLASH, I got to the surface in time to grab my slippery oar and jumped onto my boat. I was shaking from the cold water, and had a taste of salty muggy water in my mouth, which I was desperately trying to get out. I quickly paddled in my boat to get back to the group so I wouldn’t be left behind. While paddling I was looking all around at the massive evergreen trees standing on the shore as if they were columns of a old building, the sky as a large blue ocean, and the birds chirping as if they were fans in the stadium at a football game. Breaking the tranquility of the moment was one of the people in the group with me yelping as they fell off their boat down a cold two foot drop in the
The idea of “The American Dream” was founded by hard working immigrants looking for a new land of opportunity and prosperity. While many people all over the world have an idea of what this dream is, It can be broken down more specifically by the different generations and cultures that have come to the United States or grown to fulfill it. I consider “The American Dream” to be the pursuit of happiness, education, and success, and the equal opportunity that says anyone in the United States who works hard and applies themself can achieve those things. I would like to quote President Obama on this matter because he himself is somewhat the epitome of “The American Dream”. Obama says, "I think the history of the United
America has a gift to every generation. Its gift to my generation is freedom, rights as a citizen, and equality for all races and cultures.
It is possible to obtain what you aspire to have. No matter how many certain half-deserted streets you wander through, no matter how many obstacles you come across and whatever it is that may stand in your way, the American Dream will always be obtainable. The things you must do to achieve the American Dream may have been altered, it is most certainly still something that is able to be reached in society today. Some people may have it easier and could be born into the dream or into situations to where the dream is almost already in reach. On the other hand, there are people who work out of a valley of ashes; where ashes take the form of houses and chimneys but yet, the hard working American citizen still comes out on top. The American
Just like other people, I have my own American Dreams too. We all have different dreams, some have bigger dreams, some have smaller dreams but we all have the same goal which is to achieve our dreams. I have three American Dreams that I’d like to achieve in the future. First is to go to college, play professional soccer and have happy family. I will do anything to achieve these dreams.
The American Dream is not just one wish. People all around the world create goals and wish for things that maybe one day, they could earn. My American Dream is to graduate from a good college, get a doctorate’s degree in Cardiothoracic surgery, and make a change to the world. Before I finish high school, I want the world to understand the importance of respecting and motivating each other, not putting each other down. Self-confidence plays a major role in my life. I have always had a low self-esteem because of others bullying me for different reasons, but there is no excuse not to be nice to a person who is just like you. If there was a way to make the world understand this concept, I would do anything to try to get it out there. Be a ladder, or a lifeboat, help someone out even if they don’t ask for it. Don’t be that person who doesn’t care about the struggles or feelings of others.
“I have to go mija, it’s getting late”. As soon as I would hear those words that my mom would use to say, my eyes would get watery and would felt a lump in my throat. I knew that I had to be strong, but deep down I knew I needed my mother more than anything. Not having the woman that gave birth to me by my side every day, it made me grow up with a mind of an independent woman and made me capable of knowing how to manage stuff by myself.
I looked up and saw my father. "hello father, what's wrong" I asked. "Were moving so you, need to go pack." Said father. "Where are going?" I asked. "To the U.S." Said father. we finished packing all our belongings. Then, We put all of our bags into a bundle and now were now ready to go. We started to walk to the seaport to get on the steamship. When we all got there we saw the ship and we were all in awe of how massive it was. As we waited to get on the ship we all had to write our names on the manifest with our ages and our origin but I had to fill out Loretta's for her because she is only five. We got on the steamship and it was nothing like I expected.
The American Dream is a life of personal happiness and material comfort as traditionally sought by individuals in the U.S. (dictionary.com). Americans and immigrants alike are often raised to chase after this way of life without fully understanding the effort it takes to meet to this high standard. Achieving the American Dream has obstacles for many people including those in low economic status, ethnic groups, and even those that have obtained financial success but are not happy with their fortune.
“Put that back”, my mother said as she scorned me for grabbing a pack of gum. “We can not afford that right now” she told me. I thought to myself, “Well why not? It’s only a dollar”. Ever since that day I have lived to know how important money was to get through life. The ideal American Dream is to be stable in life, money, and happiness. Many people live off the thought of an American Dream, but is that still true today? They spend their every waking moment working towards their American Dream, but why should they do that if it’s not attainable. I will tell you why, because It is a lie. Americans are constantly being bombarded with lies about how to be successful in life just to give them hope. A hope where everything is going to be alright and a hope with no worries. That is not reality, in the real world no family or person is ever “perfect” like you see on TV or plastered on billboards.
Growing up in a low-income Mexican lifestyle proved to be difficult in my journey to become a successful student. Since I was a kid going into kindergarten, I understood the pain that my parents went through each day to set a better future for me. I knew that going to school was my only opportunity to give my parents and I a happier life. I started school late because of my late birthday and my mom’s excessive worry that I was not ready for school yet. Even though neither me nor my parents knew how to speak English, I felt the sudden urge to fulfill my dream of obtaining an education. I knew that I had to start somewhere to fulfill that dream no matter the ‘impossible’ obstacles I had to overcome.
My parents migrated to America in the 1990’s to personify the quintessential American Dream. When I was young I’ve always thought I was somehow unique comparing to others whose same age as me in school. I always carry a very strong positive self confidence entering every classroom thinking that I’m the best. I imagine myself holding the best position in the future, proud and successful. I’ve always wanted a lot and wanting more, like achieving more goals and bigger one. People around me says I’m an ambitious young lady. Due to the impact of my childhood environment in the city I grown up being independent and hard working. I find myself making every problem with a perfect solution and sometimes it does come out that way. I was born and raised in Lower Manhattan, New York City near Chinatown. A place I call home for 10 years. I used to live in a small apartment fulfill with the most memories down the street of East Broadway. Not until 8th grade my Family moved from New
With music blasting, voices singing and talking, it was another typical ride to school with my sister. Because of our belated departure, I went fast, too fast. We started down the first road to our destination. This road is about three miles long and filled with little hills. As we broke the top of one of the small, blind hills in the middle of the right lane was a dead deer. Without any thought, purely by instinct I pulled the wheel of the car to the left and back over to the right. No big deal but I was going fast. The car swerved back to the left, to the right, to the left. Each time I could feel the car scratching the earth with its side. My body jolted with the sporadic movements of the car. The car swerved to the right for the last time. With my eyes sealed tight, I could feel my body float off the seat of the car.
