Couple months after Bull’s death, it’s hard for the meechams to move on about bull passing. Unpacking all the boxes in the new house, Ben notices how quiet the house is without Bull’s appearance with all the screaming and yelling he had done in the past. The next morning, Lillian notices Ben being quiet and having his head down at the kitchen table, so she tells Ben to come have a chat with him and drink some coffee together. Ben asks Lillian, “Where did dad get his attitude from, and why was he so arrogant his whole life?” Lillian told Ben, “Well listen sugah, when I met your dad's dad, he was just like your father, he was always yelling at someone and screaming at the top of his lungs. As Ben proceeded to do his warm-ups, he thought about that basketball game he had with his father back at the old house, and how he tried to cheat after he had beaten him by 1 point. Once Ben finished his warm-ups and layup drills, coach discussed with his team about their first game, and how they were one of the best team in the country. Coach told his team who will be starting for tomorrow’s game, and Bens name was called out. Once basketball practice was over, Ben went back home and told Lillian how he will be starting for tomorrow’s game. Lillian was very happy for Ben and told him that the whole family will be there to support him at tomorrow's game. Mary Anne came home from school and told her mom, “I hate my new school, and no one likes me.” Lillian told Mary Anne how it’s only the second day and how she just needs to give a little time. Ben asked Matt, “You made any new friends recently?” Matt replied, “No, not at the moment.” As Lillian was cooking dinner, Ben kept telling his mom how nervous and anxious he is for tomorrow's game. Lillian told Ben, “Listen Sugah, you are one of the best on your team and there is no need for you to be nervous about that game tomorrow, you are going to kick their butt”. Sullivan had never coached anything at all before he started coaching the Joes basketball team. In order to gain knowledge about the sport, he got a book about it. He started coaching in 1927, but before the 1928 basketball season, Joes High School didn’t even have a gym. Instead, they’d practice outside on a dirt court, and two times a week they’d take a bus to the nearest gym, which was ten miles away. In order to play home games, the boys had to play in the local dance hall. The “court” was nowhere near regulation size, and the ceiling was so short that the boys couldn’t shoot an arched shot. The people who attended these basketball games had no place to sit and watch the game, the all stood around the edges of the court and on the small stage. Joes High School finally got their own gym around Christmas time because the people of Joes donated their time and material in order to make it happen.
