Code Trauma. That’s all I hear. Over and over. I can’t get the words out of my mind. They are the two words that I heard for 34 endless days starting October 15, 2015 and ending November 18, 2015. Those days spent in the hospital changed my life forever and in ways I could not imagine. I started getting headaches in the Spring of 2015 which I attributed to stress at school. I used a particular brand of over-the-counter headache medicine with my parents’ permission however, what I didn’t know was that this headache medicine was to be taken every 12 hours, not every 4. Migraine headaches affect an estimated 36 million Americans, or about 12% of the population, surpassing asthma at 8.3% (25 million) and diabetes at 7.8% (23.6 million). Migraines are much more common in women than in men--about 3 times more common. Nearly 30% of women will experience at least one episode of migraine headaches in their lifetime, most commonly in the third and sixth decades of life. However, migraines can affect anyone at any age and from any ethnic group. In addition to indirect expenses like missed work/school and lost productivity, the American Migraine Foundation estimates that migraines cost Americans more than $20 billion annually. Migraine sufferers are also more likely to experience anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, fatigue, and other pain conditions, and those who experience visual disturbances called “auras” associated with migraines are at an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Unfortunately, there is no cure for migraines. The best treatment options available only to seek to reduce frequency of attacks or treat an attack once one has begun, and medication use is often limited by side effects and difficulty of administration. The American Migraine Foundation itself labels current treatment options “far from perfect” and concludes, “Undoubtedly, better treatments are needed.” Filling this therapeutic void is the primary objective of NuPathe Inc. Our patient Ms. Blum is a 28-year-old white female who presents with symptoms of a migraine, such as waking up by a severe headache that she states is often made worse when she turns on the light. In addition, Ms. Blum presents with several factors that can trigger her migraines including her lack of sleep, her stressful life as concluded by her statement that this has been a difficult period in her life and her approaching deadline to turn in her dissertation, her weekend alcohol consumption, her menstrual cycle since she notices that a couple of days before her period starts she experiences these headaches, also she states that food doesn’t seem to appeal to her and it takes her effort to eat a meal, and her diagnosis of major depressive disorder.

Individuals who have been traumatized need to gain comfort from others who can bear witness to their pain and sorrow, and they often seek this from mental health care providers. Researchers believe that mental health workers who learn about details of client trauma are susceptible to symptoms comparable to PTSD (Hesse, 2002). Regardless of age, race, gender, or level of training, working with traumatized clients may produce long-standing effects on therapists (Edelwich & Brodsky, 1980). There are several terms that describe these effects on therapists, including compassion stress, compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, and vicarious trauma. I started studying health and nutrition when I joined Herbalife in August of 2014. I decided to study health and nutrition, because my weight was out of control and I wanted to find a way to live a healthier lifestyle. In 2014 I started making healthier food choices and along with exercising consistently, was able to drop twenty pounds in one month. Losing the weight led me to become a health and wellness trainer and to be a successful trainer I knew I had to increase my knowledge on health and nutrition.
Back home in Toronto, there have been multiple reports appearing in the news of firefighters, ambulance workers, and soldiers taking their own life due to their struggle of PTSD. Many of the suicides took place because those who took their life felt that they were not receiving the correct treatment for their disorder, or they were being bullied by their coworkers and therefore chose to not receive any form of treatment because of the possibility of the bullying becoming more severe. I feel called to become a counselor for these men and women suffering from PTSD, and assist in lowering the slowly growing number of suicides and to provide the treatment necessary for the individual.
Pulmonary contusions are another consequence from trauma to the chest, possibly not as severe as examples prior, but still dangerous. A pulmonary contusion is usually due to a blunt trauma to the thoracic cavity; the trauma causes blood to accumulate in the lung tissues and alveoli without lacerating the lung tissues. The lungs swell with the blood in the tissues, like a contusion anywhere else on the surface of the body, hence the term, “bruised lung.” With a pulmonary contusion, the patient will present, “...Tachypnea and tachycardia; while auscultating, rales and decreased breath sounds can be heard. I am dead, I do not know much of my life before the cypt. For what I do know I was abused by my parents. I do know when I was about eighteen my father was morbidly drunk and ended up killing my mother, my brother and me. I soon woke up in about a couple hundred years, as I later found out through the events I have already told you. I roamed the world visiting others like me, from the Pharaohs of Egypt to the Tsars of Russia. One man has followed me through all these years.
Subject matter in trauma is difficult due to the intensity of emotions that surface. Observing acts of abuse were difficult. Particularly the scenes were children were being abused. Moreover, self-injury videos were difficult to watch. Observing a mother who abused her child and then watching the child cope through self-injury was emotional.
Trauma relates to a type of damage to the mind that comes from a severely distressing event. A traumatic event relates to an experience or repeating events that overwhelmingly precipitated in weeks, months, or decades as one tries to cope with the current situations that can cause negative consequences. People’s general reaction to these events includes intense fear, helplessness or horror. When children experience trauma, they show disorganized or agitative behavior. In addition, the trigger of traumas includes some of the following, harassment, embarrassment, abandonment, abusive relationships, rejection, co-dependence, and many others. In life, many things are taken for granted on a customary basis. For example, we wake up in the morning and routinely expect to see and hear from certain people. Most people live daily life with the unsighted notion that every important individual in their lives at the moment, will exist there tomorrow. However, in actuality, such is not the case. I too fell victim to the routine familiarity of expectation, until the day reality taught me otherwise.
It was dark that night, I was nervous that this dreadful day was going to get worse. Sunday, October 23, 1998 I wanted to start writing this to tell about the weird things i’m starting to see in this new neighborhood. After, two of the EMT guys put us on an ambulance. Finally,we made our way to the hospital. My friend john and me were sent in palo alto medical center. It took us about fifteen minute to get there. My friend john was alright. He had a couple of stitches in his head and his arm. He got relieved after a couple of tests but, I was severely injured. I was lying on a hospital bed and thinking what I would have done in the past. Cause this terrible accident happened to me. I was sent to el camino hospital, where I went to the operation theater for my hipbones surgery.The doctor told me after surgery that my hipbones was fractured the reason they had to put a plate in hipbones to stay together.Although, my left arm was also fractured the reason I could not feel my arm. After surgery, they took me to the other room and gave me a couple of injections. Momentarily, I went to sleep. I woke up in the next day and thinking hopefully it was just a dream,but it’s not. I opened my eyes and saw a couple of relative looking me like a stranger. My dad came over my bed and gave me a hug and I literally started crying after thinking about the accident.
