An Incredible Surprise As my grandmother and I were walking out of my physical therapy appointment at 4:15 into the brisk, cold air, on the date of Friday, November 17th, I never expected a surprise such as the one that was in store for me. My fourteenth birthday had just passed on the 15th and I had no plans for celebrating since my parents and I had agreed to do this for financial reasons. Plus, they were saving up for a huge Christmas. I stepped into my grandmother’s silver Dodge Durango with plans of heading to my friend, Morgan’s house to hang out. We stopped by Wendy’s to get a quick snack of a juicy cheeseburger and some strawberry lemonade before we sped off to Morgan’s. On our way to Morgan’s, Morgan sent me a text that read, “I’ll be in the basement watching a movie so just come on in when you get here. Also, text me when you’re here.” I replied, “ Ok, will do. See you soon,” as we drove along in the awfully long car ride until we finally reached the edge of Morgan’s driveway. My friends along with my mom explained that Morgan and Kaylee both came together to throw me a party since my parents couldn’t throw one for me. Then, they showed me all the amazing Harry Potter house decorations and symbols along with the snacks they had set up. They had everything from pizza to chocolate candies. I couldn’t believe they had done all of this for me. We had so much fun eating the delicious candies, snacks, and pizza and talking. We also had a timed scavenger hunt to find stuff like wands, brooms, and fake mice and snakes. It was the day of April 13, 2000. I woke up at exactly 12 o’clock because my boyfriend was to pick me up at 1 like we planned the night before. The day looked quite nice, but I was in a fowl mood. I got into a car accident the night before and had a huge argument with my parents about the car. I finally dragged myself into the shower and got ready in half an hour. Then I went downstairs, sat on my couch, and repeatedly told myself the day would hopefully turn out better than last night. At around 1:15, my boyfriend came to pick me up. We took the 5 freeway to the 57 since it was the only way I knew how to get there. As we approached the 134 freeway, my girlfriend veered to the right, taking the 210 which was wrong way and got us lost. So, we exited the freeway and got back on the right track. Then finally, before long, we reached Norton Simon.
It seems unbelievable my oldest is a few days off being a decade old. I know every parent wonders “where has the time gone?” a multitude of times during their children’s childhoods, but as I realize my son is over halfway to 'adulthood' it seems like the time has flown by.
The struggle of not being able to breathe properly, gasping for air while the fever inside was killing me little by little and my fragile self in the age of four did not know what was happening to me I was brain dead, more like clueless little kid almost having a near death experience of having a seizure that in the end it changed my life and the way I looked at it because God gave me another chance to actually prove to him that I can be someone in my life and grateful to be alive today knowing that I have family that actually loves me for who I am.
From a young age, I was very curious. Curiosity caused my mind to see everything from a different perspective than most. I saw what could be improved and how I could improve. For example, when it came to editing movies, I was always able to see what could how it could have been better or I questioned how they had created it. My curiosity led me to try many different activities throughout high school, such as film camps, stage managing for plays, yearbook, and even creating videos for Rochester High School’s awards day. Finally, my junior year, I decided it was time I made films of my own for competitions. I wanted to have something that I could call my own. When it came to the two films I did for contests, I was there throughout the whole process.
“Come see me when you get home” It read. The rest of our journey back was much quieter. We chatted as we both tried to process what had just happened. When we got to McDonald’s, I jumped in my car and headed home.
Finally, she looked at her watch. “Oops! Its 5:30, I have to be back in time for dinner. It was nice meeting you, Travis!” Sarah skipped down the tracks waving good-bye. I waved back and caught myself grinning.
We went over there for even more birthday presents I left my grandparent’s house pampered with birthday presents to take home. I fell asleep around 10 o’clock that night and just before I closed my eyes, BING! I woke up to find my mother standing in the cracked doorway of my room holding the phone. The light from the doorway seeped into my room as if a racecar on a racetrack.
I ran in the middle of the Common Room to embrace all of my fellow Gryffindors. The twins cut the cake into pieces for all of us to eat. After we talked about different things to each other while eating the cake,and I must say it was one of the most fantastic cakes I have ever tried,we opened the presents. The most amazing presents were a pot with some roses implanted in from Neville,a cute white bracelet from Parvati Patil and a big book from Ginny called "The Art of Magic". It's about famous wizard artists through the ages.
On that fateful day in March, I was a couple months shy of my third birthday. My family and I lived in New Mexico at the time and were renting a house with an outdoor in-ground pool. It was a day of eager anticipation. It was a day of last-minute planning. It was the day before my fourteenth birthday. I had been looking forward to the party for at least two months. Everything was accounted for: balloons, Super Soakers, and music. There would be a barbeque of magnificent proportions. Miraculously, everyone had read the RSVP deadline and called in a week ahead of schedule. An enormous ice cream cake was to be delivered with eight large pepperoni pizzas. Needless to say, I was excited. It was to be my first party at our new house. I helped cook the enormous array of snack foods. I eventually surrendered to the temptation and stole a few strips of marinated steak when my mom wasn't looking. I had gone to bed that night with dreams of family, friends, and possibly a new stereo system.

I remember this day distinctly. I pulled my hat over my eyes because the sun was shining extremely bright on this hot summer day. I looked over to my mom to tell her that the gas had run out of the lawnmower. She was trimming the extra leaves on the bushes. My mother loved taking care of the lawn. She couldn’t take the lawn looking neglectful. I loved that about my mom she didn’t care how old I was she only cared that I represent her and my dad and no one else.
