I decided on a career as a pediatric nurse because my sister was a long term patient at CHOA. During her time in the hospital, the nurses not only took excellent care of her but also made sure to take care of my entire family. Now, I just want to give back and help patients and family who are in the same situation that mine was.
My interest in nursing first stemed when my grandfather was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer. Hospice had come into their home, and I was amazed at how they coped with their job. The people who took care of the person I loved the most, were compassionate and caring. Most of all they helped all of us through a time of need. During that time I realized helping people in whatever way I could in the medical field, was the career for me. My grandmother was also a nurse. She would tell me stories of when she worked in different hospitals. When I heard all of her experiences, I wanted to make memories of my own in the nursing field. Every kid thinks they know what they want to be when they grow up. It changes over the years though. When I was around seven years old I wanted to be a pop star. This dream was based on a disney channel show called hannah montana, about a teen girl who lives a double life as a pop star. When I was around ten years old I wanted to be an actor on a sit com. Then I discovered basketball. I started playing all the time. I had “hoop dreams” as one would say. I wanted to be a WNBA player. That's what I said when anybody asked. By 9th grade reality caught up to me and I lost touch of that dream. Being a WNBA player would be almost impossible for me. So would playing basketball in college, but I still want to pursue it. I realized I was way behind in terms of basketball skills compared to other girls in the 2018 class. I adopted a love for biology and math. Those tie into what my real dream is.
As I walk thru the doors of Floyd Medical Center, I look back at all I've accomplished. How far I have come from that shy girl in high school to an outgoing and friendly registered nurse. Walking down the hallway to my boss’ office, I feel a sense of relief. I'm finally finished with college and on to the start this new chapter of my life. Becoming a neonatal nurse has taken a long time but I know in the end it will all be worth it.
I am currently planning to attend Richland Community college and graduate as a registered nurse. The reason I chose this career is because helping out others has always driven me forward. I want to study something that I know I will be content doing for the rest of my life and registered nursing is the right choice. I have always wanted to work in the medical field since I was a child. Around four, I told my pediatrician during a well- check visit that I wanted to grow up and be just like her. My love of infants and children strongly influenced my career choice because I want to have the ability to help sick children who do not have the ability to help themselves. I have considered many options to enter the healthcare field from nurse, to doctor, and finally came to the conclusion that what I truly wanted out of my future resided in a career as a Physician Assistant. Becoming a PA is not something that I have considered lightly.
Children get injured or sick every day, and it doesn’t matter whether the child goes to a doctor or a pediatrician they are still tended to by a pediatric nurse. A pediatric nurse has to have many qualities. They also have to take many different classes. A pediatric nurse’s pay can vary from location to location depending on where they are working. Pediatric nurses must endure many different things to make it into this particular work field, and have many different qualities.
Kids aren’t like adults, their bodies are growing and changing constantly and require specific knowledge to understand. I find it interesting learning about children’s mindsets and how their bodies are different from adults. I have always had a passion for working with kids and anytime that I have gotten an opportunity to be around kids and working with them I take it. I love being able to help kids feel better and to see them develop physically and mentally throughout time. Seeing a kids’ reaction to learning something new or feeling better is a highlight to my day which is why I chose to pursue my career in pediatrics as a pediatric nurse.
I started my Nursing career in India and then I came to the United States and became an RN. I entered Nursing with the thinking that Nursing is a profession that will always allow me to have a job and all my patients will get better. However, from my experiences I understood that Nursing is more than just giving medications, and it requires clinical competence, cultural sensitivity, ethics, caring for others, and life-long learning about others and the evolving field of medicine. I started out working as a child care worker at various daycares. I always had a passion for all things science related especially the medical field. I choose to be a Family Nurse Practitioner. In many ways, it has also chosen me. I was twelve years old when I first thought of becoming a nurse. I was spending time with my elderly neighbor who was like a grandmother to me, and she had an accident. She was mortified. I ran over and got something to clean it up and started to wipe up the mess without thinking about it. “We all have accidents,” I said. After she got changed she said, “You were meant to be a nurse. Some day you will be, I just know it.” She passed away later that year and I have never forgotten that moment.
The career i chose is a branch of the medical field. I chose a career in nursing, more specifically the career path of a registered nurse. This career consists of providing care for people of all ages and helping them with managing their conditions. I chose this career because my mother is an rn and my family has a strong presence in the medical field. It is important to understand the education or training requirements, skills, or talents needed, salary, benefits offered, and the duties for a particular career when making this decision.
