Personal Experience: The Benefits Of Volunteering In The Community

I was part of a team that went to the Convalescent Hospital and spent time with the seniors there. My team was Yesenia, Maya, Sydna, Esma, and I. Our project started out as us playing games with the seniors. However, I believe it morphed into something more personal. Our original goal was to make the seniors feel more included in our community, and we did just that. This essay will go through my personal experience with this project, from the beginning to the end. First, I will talk about how I felt in the beginning. Some pros are the actual benefits that everyone receives. However, I also believe there are some drawbacks. For some, volunteering can be an excuse to call themselves a caring person. In addition, some volunteering is just for the attention, self validation, or in this case, for school. Once the quota has been fulfilled, the volunteering stops, and those being helped are in the same place they started. Volunteering is different because I am a teenager. For one, volunteering looks good on college and job applications. Once one is an adult, volunteering doers not have the same personal benefits. Therefore, it is often done just for the good that it gives to the world, and not for oneself. In addition, teenagers have more free time to help others. My advice to other young adults who want to be involved in volunteer work is just do it. Too often we are stuck on the logistics of what we want to do, and I believe that it is more important to simply start. Of course, I do recommend making a plan, but do not get stuck on it. Also, get support and advice from those around you, such as teachers or parents. I believe that volunteer work has become extremely important in our society, and this is due to the fact that there are more and more people who need help. In addition, communities have become less close knit. In previous decades, those who needed help could be helped by friends or neighbors, but this is not the case
