Personal and Professional Ethics Reflection Paper

Humans are social by nature, and wherever socializing occur conflicts appear. Since the dawn of civilization, people started many systems and methods by which they judge things right or wrong. The primary goal was to guide them to do the correct things and avoid troubles. These methods and systems developed to become more complex and the importance of ethics evolved. Now people realize more than ever that their actions affect others and can have unintentional consequences. This is similar to the way my personal ethics developed. Growing up, I absorbed the knowledge from my surrounding environment and developed the necessary skills to make decisions.

It also helped me to understand some of the motives that might drive some people to behave unethically, especially in a business environment. This ethics course has also given me the chance to discuss many ethical dilemmas with other colleagues who are coming from different backgrounds. In our discussions, we shared different views of each issue, and experienced a number of methods people use in analyzing and processing such issues. I believe that I have strengthened my abilities and judgment to become more realistic in viewing ethical issues.

In the business field, the importance of ethics takes another level of importance. Here, the stakes are higher, and the motives are stronger for people to act unethically in order to score gains. Stakeholders including investors, stockholder, employees, customers, government agencies, and even secondary stakeholders, are demanding high level of transparency and ethical commitment from businesses.
