Volunteering in South Dakota: A Young Leader's Journey

“Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith.” This bible verse is my motivation in everything I do on daily basic. Not many twenty year olds I know would willing give up two weeks of their summer vacation to sleep on a high school gym floor. However, for me this is the highlight of my summer. Each summer I travel to South Dakota to stay on an Indian reservation to volunteer my time and efforts to better their community. On this trip we walk around and get to know the community and find out ways we can put our services to work. We play games with the kids and teach them life skills of sharing and communicating with others. We clean up garbage from their …show more content…

So I decide to put my efforts to work in Chicago. My job in Chicago is working with under privilege kids, I mentor them I advocate for them in school and I help to keep them off the streets and out of gangs. I love my job to death and though at times it may be hard I’m so very thankful to have met all my students. While working I noticed many of my teenage girls struggle with self-confidence and being independent, so outside of my work time I created a girls group for these teens. During these meetings I work on helping the girls create positive self-image and how to live above the stereotypes people may have set for them. At the end of the year I helped my girls put on a fashion show for their families. Seeing them strut on stage with such self-confidence put tears in my eyes.
It’s truly amazing how ones people’s actions can change the world in so many ways. I may still be young but I refuse to sit aside and let others struggle with issues I know I can help with. The best part about community service is not only does it help and benefit others it makes each person feel so good to have put a smile on someone else’s face. I’m so excited to see how my South Dakota trip goes this summer and I can’t wait to get back to my students in August. I hope my drive to help others never dims for the feelings I gain from helping others is truly
