Fitting in is one of the many things people worry about in life. We feel like we’re the only ones going through these things. It’s nice to know sometimes that we aren’t alone and I have just the movie to make people feel like they aren’t the only ones going through loneliness or the different challenges faced throughout life. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is an excellent movie that covers some of the struggles that teenagers face today. Stephen Chbosky, the writer and director, showcases depression, anxiety, homosexuality, substance abuse, and sexual abuse in the film. Each song is able to grasp onto the viewers’ emotions and really engages the viewers. The song that Sam claims is perfect for the tunnel, “Heroes” by David Bowie, relates to Sam and Charlie’s relationship: “I, I will be king and you will be queen.” While it is playing, Charlie is looking at Sam, as she stands in the back of the truck, with pure awe. The song that plays during the dance, “Come on Eileen” by Dexy’s Midnight Runners, brings Charlie to Sam and Patrick and gets him out of his shell. It also reminds Charlie of how important his friends have become to him: “At this moment, you mean everything” It brings Charlie dancing their way, awkwardly. At that moment, Charlie was happy again and felt like he found his place in the world.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a must watch movie that touches on the struggles teens face today such as depression, anxiety, homosexuality, substance abuse, and sexual abuse. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is able to engross the viewers’ attention throughout the movie through its astonishing selection of actors, characters, and the soundtrack chosen. The movie The Breakfast Club is a perfect example of peer relationships in the adolescent society. It shows the viewer some of the main stereotypes of students in high school you have a jock, a nerd, the weirdo, a rebel, and a prep. Over the course of a Saturday detention the different types of peers learn a lot about one another by hearing what each one has done to get into Saturday detention as well as why they chose to do it.
The movie “Breaking Away” presents the story of a young man from working class origins who seeks to better himself by creating a persona through which he almost, but not quite, wins the girl. The rivalry between the townies and the college students sets the scene for the story of four friends who learn to accept themselves as they "break away" from childhood and from their underdog self-images.
The film being analysed is the Breakfast Club, directed by John Hughes. Trapped in Saturday detention are 5 stereotyped teens. Claire, the princess, Andrew, the jock, John, the criminal, Brian, the brain, and Allison, the basket case. At 7 am, they had nothing to say, but by 4 pm; they had uncovered everything to each other. The students bond together when faced with the their principal, and realise that they have more in common than they think, including a hatred for adult society. They begin to see each other as equal people and even though they were stereotyped they would always be The Breakfast Club. The Breakfast Club highlights a variety of pressures that are placed upon teenagers through out high school. One of the most challenging aspects of screenwriting is creating characters that an audience can identify with, relate to, and be entertained by.
Despite an inappropriate music-video sequence and a phony up-tempo finale, The Breakfast Club offers a breakthrough portrait of the pain and misunderstanding which result from the social hierarchy created by youth themselves. The lookers and the jocks are popular and can do whatever they want — except relate to those outside their social circle of winners.
I believe this movie does a good job incorporating what we have discussed in class in terms of adolescent development. Although the movie is greatly exaggerated and blown up, the movie does emphasize on key factors to the development of an adolescent. The role of identity plays an important role in all adolescence which can help shape their future. In psychology, identity is the conception, qualities, beliefs, and expressions that make a person or group. The movie, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”, illustrates how teens struggle with identity. Charlie is an anti-social freshman who is befriended by a group of high school seniors, who introduces him to the world of drugs, love, sexulatity, friendship, and lies. His friends play a huge role in his development. Throughout the movie, Charlie was able to build upon his character and develop friendships that gave him a new perspective that life needs, to live life rather than watching it.
In one scene, Mr. Anderson is asked by Charlie why people stay with others who are wrong for them, speaking of Sam and her boyfriend, and he responds with his famous quote, “We accept the love we think we deserve.” That statement is very powerful and makes a lot of sense in the world of psychology. It is shown that many of the characters in the film accepted the love they thought they deserved whether it be Sam with her boyfriend, Patrick with Brad, or even Charlie with Mary Elizabeth. However, with the ability of change, they all stood up for themselves and one another and started to embrace pure love and friendship and accepted nothing that defies that. Through these Charlie tells his story from his perspective. He will experience many highs and lows related to the adolescence phase.
