The characters in my book are very interesting, there are 3 main characters. Percy, Grover, and Annabeth. Percy is the son of Poseidon who is a Greek God. A powerful God who rules over all the oceans and everything in them. Then there is Percy's best friend Grover, is a Satyr, that is someone who is half horse & half man. Annabeth is the daughter of Athena who is a Greek Goddess.There are other important characters as well in the story like Percy's mom, or the other Gods. Percys personality in the beginning of the book is best described as shyness or acts like he doesn't care, but over the book he expands out of that stage and becomes more outgoing and courageous. Grover is fearless, he has to be because he is Percys protector. But when they go to the underworld he is kinda freaked out by Hades. Annabeth is not afraid of anything because she is the daughter of Athena, goddess of wisdom and war. Annabeth has trained for many years and w ants to fight as many people and monsters as possible, other than dummies.This is because her whole life was fighting lifeless practice...
In the novel, Black Ships Before Troy by Rosemary Sutcliff, the majority of the characters are brave, and selfless heroes, except for Paris. Character traits are the aspects of a person's behavior and attitudes that make up that person's personality. Paris is a selfish coward who expects everyone to fight his war for him.
In the story “Sword in the Stone” the Wart learns some valuable life educating lessons that will help him in the long run. When Sir Ector, and his friend, Sir Grummore Grummursum are at the drinking port they decide they should go on a quest to find a tutor for his sons, the Wart and Kay. A new tutor was needed since their old tutor went crazy. It was a busy time of the year and Sir Ector did not have the time to find a tutor. After a day of difficult working in the hay fields the Wart and Kay decide to go hawking. Their hawk flies away hoping it will find a rabbit and sadly it flies into the forest and sits in a tree. Kay gets aggravated and storms off while the Wart decides to recapture it. He stops under a tree where it had landed and the Wart gets shot at by an arrow. He runs through the forest and finds a knight named King Pellinore. King Pellinore is on a quest for the questing beast which is a magical animal. King Pellinore hears the beast and dashes off to find it leaving the Wart behind. The Wart was alone and fell asleep under a nearby tree.
Percy is always afraid that his friends might die. He is constantly questioning his “own powers” (29, Riordan) and is unsure he can save his friends. The protagonist is unable to complete his missions properly, because he is always battling his own self confidence. Anyone who is incapable of having confidence in themselves will not obtain their goal. Moreover, when Percy realizes he is able to “destroy” (79, Riordan)
The world of Arthurian literature is filled with magic and adventure that enchants readers of all ages. T.H. White has done a fantastic job of turning the childhood adventures of Arthur by turning his narrative into spellbinding, cartoon like interpretation of the sword in the stone legend. Moral values are apparent from the beginning of White’s novel. White has cleverly connected all the educational adventures of Arthur, along with the people and animals encountered to the pulling the sword out of the stone. This marvelous amalgamation of key elements not only ties the loose ends of Arthur’s adventures together, they also solidify the reasoning behind Arthurs’ predetermined path to becoming the king of England.
Percy Jackson lives a normal but hard life. The reader is able to determine that this is the ordinary world as Percy has not been told his true identity. Percy thinks he is an ordinary average teenage boy attending sixth grade at his sixth school, Yancy Academy which is a “private school for troubled kids in upstate New York.” Percy mentions that his life is quite confusing as well as he describes he has dyslexia and ADHD. These are the problems create a major issues as they affecting and make his academic achievement difficult. At birth Percy’s first father had left him and his mother. After his father left them his mother decided to get remarried. From Percy’s point of view this was not a smart choice as his step father treated her poorly. Percy is definitely unsatisfied and frustrated with her decision as he respects and cares about her a lot. Percy also greatly loves his mother as he defends her when she is disrespected by his stepfather. Percy seems to only have one real friend, Grover who is scrawny and “on top of all that, he is crippled”. He does not associate with other kids as he feels he does not belong with them. The reason he is in trouble at home and school could be that others don’t recognize and realize him as well as he does not understand his place. This is what the reader would classify as Percy’s ordinary world. From this point on, the story will further develop into the next stage call to adventure as the ordinary world seems to be a place the he despises.
N. Scott Momaday, shares the cultural background of the Kiowa tribe in “The Way to Rainy Mountain”. He is a long descendent that has no experience with the tribe during their traditional era but from the stories he has heard from his grandmother, he feels more connected to the Kiowa culture. He spreads light about who the Kiowas were and described who his grandmother was as well. With the experiences he shared with his grandmother, likely influenced the person he is today. In the end he is happy and proud of who his grandmother was and will remain even after death.
Each of these characters posses a different personality which contributes to the book as a whole. Throughout the book I felt connected to one character, that character was George. George and I share similar qualities and our lifestyles can relate. One major characteristic I found in George is his ability to take the initiative in whatever he is doing, therefore showing his sense of leadership qualities. This caught my eye automatically since I am the type of person to stand up and demonstrate my leadership to others.
“The Hobbit” was written by J. R. R. Tolkien and secured as a copyright in 1937. The story is about a short, peaceful creature named Bilbo Baggins who, like most hobbits, is about half as tall as a human, but not nearly as loud. Bilbo resides in his comfortable hole where he leads a very easy-going life. He does, however have a side to himself that wants to go out and explore the world and be adventurous. One day a wizard, named Gandalf, comes to Bilbo’s house and discovers that he could use an adventure to make a difference in his life. Bilbo declines Gandalf’s invitation, but gets dragged into an expedition when Gandalf hires Bilbo as a “Burglar” to join a group of dwarves. These dwarves, led by Thorin, are going to head to the Lonely Mountain to reclaim treasure stolen from their family by a fierce dragon, named Smaug. Throughout the quest, the party is faced with trouble from trolls, goblins, spiders, and many “evil” creatures. Bilbo is useful to the group because he can sneak around very quietly, and explore things without getting caught. This ability to sneak around is ever increased when he stumbles across a magic ring that makes him invisible. Using the ring, Bilbo comes across a way to kill the dragon and reclaim the treasure. He spreads word of Smaug’s weak spot and the dragon is killed, but not before an entire town is destroyed. When the treasure is reclaimed, there is much controversy over who gets to claim it. Thorin is, however, unwilling to share the treasure with anyone but the dwarves, and a war brews over it. The “good” creatures unite and defeat the “evil” creatures, but as a consequence Thorin is killed in battle. The treasure is then spread peacefully among the “good” creatures, including Bilbo, and he heads home. When he returns he finds that the other hobbits do no longer wish to interact with Bilbo because of his newfound adventurous ways. He doesn’t mind though, because he has gained many friends out of his expedition, who stop by frequently. The Hobbit is a great story for people who like to leave their present reality, and simply enter a world of fantasy.
The character I have chosen for study from Edwidge Danticat’s written novel, “A Wall of Fire Rising” is Guy Sr. Guy is the father of a young son, Guy Jr. and husband to a woman named Lili. The relatively poor family lived in a small shack in a shanty town in Haiti near a sugar mill. Guy has a charming personality and genuinely loves his family; however, he does not have the financial means to provide for the family the way he would like. When Guy learned that his son was playing an important role in a play, his face lit up with joy and happiness. There are definitely positive characteristics of Guy’s personality such as; the love he shows for his family and his willingness to seek work at the sugar mill or wherever he could to provide a meal for his family.
Authors develop characters’ personalities in order to add depth to their story and allow readers to feel more connected to the characters. Beyond this, characterization also allows authors to develop the themes of their stories in a more clear manner. A prime example of this would be in the poem Judith, where the author contrasts Judith and Holofernes’ personalities in order to develop the major themes of heroism and having faith in God.
Percy Jackson is the main character in this story, who is a demi god, who mortals are after. His name is short for Perseus and his father is one of the big three gods, Poseidon. He is suffering from dyslexia and ADHD, which could be deliberately added to the character by Riordan, to show he is meant to be a hero, and not to do well in school. This shows that school is not what he is good at, and he is destined to be a hero and save people. The character Grover, who plays Percy’s best friend, parallels a Satyr who is human from the waist up and goat from the waist down and is a companion of wine God, Dionysus, who we later learn, is the camp director for Half-Blood Camp.
The beginning of this book puzzles the reader. It doesn't clearly state the setting and plot in the first chapter; it almost leaves the mood open to how the reader interprets it. In the romance story The Notebook, by Nicholas Sparks, the plot then shifts from a nursing home to a small town -- New Bern, North Carolina. It baffles the reader so much that it urges one to read on. The romance of Noah and Allie in this book is so deep and complex that it will bring a tear to the eye of any reader.
In my book the Perks of Being a Wallflower, there are four main characters. Charlie, Sam, Patrick, and Mary Elizabeth. The way that the Author describes charlie is kind of like a sensitive young man who is trying to figure out what to do with his life. He doesn’t really have any friends because last year, his best friend died and his Aunt died in a car crash. Sam seems like a really energetic young woman who loves hanging out with her friends and listening to classic rock. I think that the Author made her character perfectly because every word she says, seems like she is happy on the outside but a little lost in the inside. Patrick is a jokester who is depressed sometimes because he is gay and his boyfriend has to pretend that he doesn’t love him. He is Sam’s step brother and they seem to be great friends. He loves music as well. Mary Elizabeth is a mix between a buddhist, and a punk. She shaved half of her head and on the weekends she has a show called “punk rocky” which is supposed to be a re-make of this show called the rocky horror picture show. She dates Charlie for a while but is controlling, and Charlie doesn’t really like her because he likes sam, a lot.
The minds of children are the most impressionable. Children are not born with any predetermined judgments or ideas about controversial subjects. They do not know what racism, homophobia, or discrimination are, or how to practice them. They are not born knowing what religion they will practice, or even what religion is. This fact about children is among the reasons that children's literature is as important as it is. For as long as humans have been creating them, there have been books that have been considered controversial. Children's books are no different. There have been children's books that have been banned from various places or groups, such as religious groups, schools, and even entire countries. The reasons behind the banning of these books vary, and the criticism of censorship as a practice is an issue that is widely debated. One modern book series that has been censored in varies outlets is the Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling.
Ultimately I need to do this, She recently told London Times, I could have stopped writing four years ago and I would have been fine financially. At this point in my life I’m not writing for the money and I could definitely do without the fame. The only point is to satisfy myself now and out of loyalty to the fans. But when I say it’s for me, it’s also for Harry… and being true to what I know will be his end. (Shapiro 228).
