However, the Lightning Thief may contain some mature topics that parents of younger readers might want to discuss with their child prior or after reading. On the other hand, the Lightning Thief is an excellent book for readers looking for a fairly easy read, that has a lot of action and adventure in it, and includes context to Greek Mythology, but might not be a book for readers that are not interested in Greek mythology and myths. There is no doubt in mythology that the king of gods, Zeus, is the most supreme and powerful, ruling the sky. He controls the thunderbolt, a symbol of power feared by both gods and mortals. The Greeks and Romans honored Zeus above all other gods. He is without mistake, the god of all gods. Their stories of Zeus are plenty; his designs have molded mythology from his birth. Zeus' victory in outwitting his intelligent wife, Metis, by swallowing her pregnant, was the gateway used by the Greeks and Romans to show Zeus as the greatest god to come since his father and grandfather. However, as the stories of the gods and goddesses unfold, the Greeks and Roman's interpretation of Zeus' characteristics are different. Zeus is always upheld as the king of gods, but his other personal attributes to his godly rein are conflicting. Zeus' characteristics of fearfulness of female deities, cunningness and use of trickery, and lust in Ovid's Metamorphoses compared to the Theogony are opposed due to Hesiod's true respect of Zeus versus Ovid's lack of respect of Jupiter in Roman mythology.
Percy Jackson is a very interesting character but he’s more interesting when they keep some his great characteristics in the movie. There are many differences along with similarities in the comparison between the book and the movie of Percy Jackson The Lightning Thief. One of the major differences between the two was how in the book Luke and Percy never fought for the bolt because Luke took it, but in the movie Luke and Percy have an epic battle for the bolt. A good similarity with the two is that they do a very good job in describing Percy’s background and how they were in the Lotus hotel and got stuck their for hours but realistically was 5 days. I will be discussing and some of the main similarities and differences
The lightning thief is the first book in the series. Percy Jackson was a twelve-year-old boy but not just any young boy; he was a demigod. In other words he’s half human and half god. In the beginning Percy didn’t know he was a demigod until an incident happen with his so called “algebra teacher”, Mrs.Dodds Percy turned her into dust with a pen,( a sword in disguise as a pen i should say) He told his best friend at the camp Grover right after it happened but he acting like he had know idea what Percy was talking about. Grover claimed that there was never a Mrs.Dodds. Percy also asked his favorite teacher Mr.Brunner; he also said there was never a Mrs.Dodds working at the school, Ever!
My favourite part about it’s about the part of greek mythology that isn’t well known. The book was very interesting but some may find it a hard read due to all the little details that become big details in the later books. If you enjoy this book I would highly recommend reading the rest of the series, Days of Blood and Starlight and Dreams of Gods and Monsters. During a chariot race, the campers are attacked by Stymphalian Birds, Tantalus, who was replacing Chiron at the time, sends Clarisse La Rue on a quest to go find the fleece. Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson run away from camp to go and find the fleece themselves. Hermes, the god of jacks, thieves, messages, etc., gives them gifts to help them on their quest. Percy asks his dad, Poseidon, to help them get to a cruise ship on the horizon. Three Hippocampi appear from the water and carries the three of them to the cruise ship named the Princess Andromeda. Once aboard the ship, they discover that the ship seems to be deserted, but find fully stocked cabins to sleep in. In the morning they wake up to find the ship full of tourists, but all of the tourists seem kind of off, as if they were in some sort of a trance. Then they discover that the ship is infested with monsters as well. The three are captured by Luke Castellan, who is the owner of the ship. Percy and his friends discover that Luke is transporting the ship with monsters and the remains of the Titan Kronos in a golden sarcophagus. Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief is about a young boy (around the age of twelve) who finds out that he is the son of the greek god Poseidon. Percy (short for Perseus) faces troubling situations that the reader can relate to and gain a deeper connection to the book. “How old was I?” I asked. “I mean. . . when he left”(Riordan 38). This quote gives some readers of the novel a personal connection through parental problems the world faces today. Riordan shows the hardship of being a single mother. This situation can connect to Jane Eyre by showing a want that both Percy and Jane want...love. With the connection to the reader as a foundation to the novels importance, it still does not exhibit value. Horn Book Magazine says “The novel is packed with humorous allusions to Greek Mythology...among with rip snorting action sequences, this book really shines” (Horn Book Magazine). With what Horn Book said about the novel it gives educational support that is taught in schools. “Rick Riordan’s (2005) popular Percy Jackson series for middle school readers provides a substantial link to greek mythology, utilizing Homer’s Odyssey and Lliad to create a window into classical texts” (Bright). Greek Mythology in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Rick Riordan’s ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’ focuses on Greek mythology and interprets this into a children’s story. Throughout the story, there are many references and adaptations to mythological tales, and each one is portrayed in a different way. Riordan writes this story as though Hercules, Zeus and Poseidon were still around today, and this would be the effect they would have on people in this day and age.
The gods are used by Homer to add twists on an otherwise standard plot of war. I shall concentrate on Zeus. however, and reflect on his actions and their outcomes in the Trojan War. and more importantly, the story of The Iliad. Zeus, very untypical of a Greek.
Greek mythology has always been a very fascinating subject to talk about. The belief that gods and goddesses once ruled the Earth is an interesting idea. To think that the land and sea were once looked upon by one of the strongest and fiercest gods that ever lived. Poseidon or Neptune was known to be one of the strongest gods that ever walked on the planet. Poseidon is best known for protecting and watching over the ocean.
Then they find Percy, dripping wet and angry, but with the eagle standard. They climb on Arion with a load of weapons and rush to make it back to camp Jupiter before it’s destroyed. They find it at war. The legion is outnumbered and surrounded. Arion can’t run any farther. Tyson, Percy’s cyclops-half-brother, and Mrs. O'Leary, his giant hellhound from camp half blood show up. They charge and bring the weapons to the legion. Percy, aboard his colossal canine, fires lightning from the standard that incinerates half of the giants army. The amazons, lead by Queen Hylla, come to aid them in battle. Percy heads straight for the giant Polybotes. After luring him into city limits, he and Terminus, the god of boundaries, slay the giant and save the camp. The army chants to make him praetor. They do and they begin repairs. Most people that learn about the twelve main Olympian gods might think that they are confusing, imperfect, and just down right weird. And they are. They have symbols to represent them but most of the symbols for them have no connection. However, let 's take Zeus for example, one of his symbols is the thunderbolt, Zeus 's most well known symbol. Zeus however is connected to the thunderbolt because he can throw them.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the Lightning Thief the movie is about a young boy who has just discovered that he is a demi-god Percy Jackson. His father is Poseidon and his mother has been keeping it from him for many years. There is a lightning bolt that is stolen from Zeus on Mt. Olympus and Zeus believes that Percy has stolen it and demands its return by the summer solstice. In the mean time Percy gets attacked by multiple magical and mythological beings. There is a camp that demi-gods are safe from these things which is where Percy’s mother and his protector, Grover, take him to. This is where Percy’s journey begins. After a few days of being at the camp he realizes what he has to do. His mother was taken by Hades to the underworld and Percy has to save her all while trying to prove to Zeus that he did not steal the Lighting bolt.
