Percocet: Cardiovascular System - Vessels and Circulation Percocet is considered to fall under the category of an opioid. Opioids are drugs that interact with opioid receptors which are located on the body and brain’s nerve cells (“Opioids”). Prescribed opioid pain relievers are usually safe to take when following the prescription amount suggestion. Because percocet provides a sense of euphoria along with being a pain reliever, this can cause them to be misused and abused. Along with relieving the pain, percocet can also affect the cardiovascular system by sometimes causing a widening of the blood vessels (“What Is Percocet”).
Percocet is usually prescribed to be taken orally as a pill capsule, but individuals will crush the pills up and snort them in order to feel a faster and more intense high. Snorting any type of drug can lead to significant nasal passage damage. The drug comes in contact with the blood vessels that line the nasal passage causing the vessels to constrict. Once these blood vessels constrict and cut off the nutrients that are delivered by blood, it causes the tissue to shrivel up and even possibly die.
