One of my favorite extracurricular activities was peer tutoring. My freshman year we moved from Virginia to South Carolina. I had always been a great student and math was my favorite subject. However, at my new school I began failing at Math. I struggled through out the entire year with no support other then from my parents. I passed but barely. After that year my parents were determined to find a better school for me.
When I started at Gray Collegiate I knew I was home. They were rigorous, supportive, and traditional in their academic approach. I again became a good student who thrived in math classes. I was asked to become a peer tutor to help other students in math and science. I was thrilled to help other students who were struggling
Teaching in the lifelong learning sector encompasses students of many: age ranges, backgrounds and abilities. As a result, the roles, responsibilities and boundaries of the tutor can at first appear to be immeasurable.
I have a great affection for math. I enjoy math, since it is challenging and requires a lot of thinking. There are always multiple ways to solve any type of math problems, and I always get a feeling of accomplishment when I find the correct solution. In sixth grade, when I first heard of the Math Club, I immediately registered. The teacher told me that I was the only one and she needed more members or the club would have to be cancelled. Worried, I recruited about ten of my friends to join the Math Club. Hence, she named me as the team leader. Participants in the Math Club competed in multiple math competitions. I was chosen one of the ten students that represented my school at the Torrance Regional Middle School Math Competition. That year, I received a certificate for the highest point total for the Math Olympiads competition at my school. In addition, I placed third in the AMC 8 and my score was among the top five percent of all participants. Participating in math competitions has given me the challenges that I am always looking for, taught me good study habits, and how to handle pressure.
I would define my experience in Lone Star College as motivating and advancing. As a typical adolescent, I used to believe that community colleges were nothing compared to big universities. As soon as I graduated from high school, I started to apply to all universities I was interested in, even the ones that were located far from my hometown, Venezuela. I was neither considering to study a two-year degree nor considering to study in a small college. However, when I was about to start my career in Venezuela, due to social and economic crisis in the country, universities closed as protests arose, and there was no clue when they would open once again. It was when I realized I had to move from my country and explore new choices to get my degree. Suddenly, I found a small college, located in a nice sector in Texas, called Lone Star College-Montgomery (LSC-M), and my life extremely changed in several aspects.
I am enrolled at UC Blue Ash and my experiences and relationships to the courses that I will be writing about will reflect the Blue Ash campus. I like the UC Clermont College and am fortunate to take the summer courses here but since I live in Indiana it is just too far to drive here. I was very fortunate to be able to take most of the courses at the Blue Ash campus.
As to be expected, I like anyone else, faced challenges at home that tested my academic abilities. In dealing with the emotional abuse of an alcoholic-bipolar mother, I persevered and did everything I could to prove I was better than the mother who was raising me.
I am writing to you today to persuade you to become a peer tutor during your senior year of high school. Peer tutoring certainly is something unique to do. So many of my friends told me to be a service learner but I chose to be a peer tutor and I do not regret this decision. While in service learning you are just delivering stuff around the building, in peer tutoring you actually get the chance to help fellow underclassmen. I think this is one of the best ways to give back to your community. Another reason why I enjoy being a peer tutor is that I get to choose which class I want to tutor in. Imagine you're playing in a volleyball match. The setter sets up the ball for you and you come in, and slam the ball to the floor. In many ways, peer tutoring is like volleyball. The tutee is the hitter, and the tutor is the setter. In this situation, they are peers that the coach, or teacher, put together to score the point, or get the A+. See, the tutor is always trying to make the tutee better. Most peer tutoring programs have had positive results. Many studies prove them to be cost effective and academically beneficial. However, some might argue it to be a waste of time and not at all effective compared to a teacher. Valley Center schools should create a peer tutoring program because it will help students build communication skills, lead students to a better future career, and expand students' general knowledge.
As a normal twelve-year old student, I was in my sixth grade Reading class afterschool. I was failing the class and my teacher Mrs. Garcia, told me that I needed at least a seventy to pass. In order to get that passing grade I needed to stay afterschool. I kind of disliked Reading, and it was very frustrating to be there after school hours. Since my dad has been very strict with my grades as well as my sister 's, I needed to be passing every single class I had. My mom and dad have always been working morning shifts so in the afternoon we could all be together. They could only arrange to pick up my little sister from Kinder. However, my older sister, Ninis & I needed to walk home every day.
Helping people, whether it is through difficult times or to just achieve a goal, is one of the most rewarding of human experiences. However, with it being so rewarding, there is significant difficulty behind successfully helping someone. Luckily there are people that specialize in helping such as peer counsellors. Although helping does come naturally for some, certain things can be learnt to make one a better helper.
My grades were average, but I scored high enough to please my parents. I lived in a wonderland of games, toys and friends until a certain examination came my way. It was my first real math exam that changed everything. My father, recently returned from New York City, did all he possibly could to train me in the ways of addition and multiplication, but to no avail. I failed that exam.

Half way through that year my cousin who is like a brother to me decided it was time for him to move to Phoenix Arizona accompanied by his newly wedded wife and try to make a living there. Him leaving really hit me hard, I was pretty close to becoming depressed. During that time I preferred to keep my mind busy as a result my grades shot up almost forty percent. Math in not my favorite subject at all, but for the first time in my entire life I can say that I really enjoyed and looked forward to going to my first period math class, I had the highest grade in that particular class for that semester. For the rest of that school year after overcoming all my problems I was just going to school getting my work done, get home, finish homework and do some work around the house.
