Pedagogical Practice Reflection

I believe that it is essential for a teacher to have a thorough understanding of the standards and the principles of learning and teaching (POLT) in order to not only support student learning, but to also reflect and strengthen their own pedagogical practice. I believe that having a sound understanding of these initiatives has helped me throughout my practicums to produce and maintain a learning environment that is conducive to meeting the students’ needs. I also believe that having a sound understanding on assessment and reporting has helped me to measure the student’s progression, enabling me with the ability to present this information to other stakeholders in the students learning and welfare. For example looking at POLT 1: The learning environment is supportive and productive. This principal placed a large focus in a unit I developed on Australian Politics. An example of one activity from this unit is when the students had to form their own opinions, during this activity student’s opinions on current community issues was sought, and students’ were encouraged to talk about the complexities of the issue and the role each level of government plays towards the issue. The students were invited to express their own points of view, while others listened carefully and responded respectfully, even if they disagreed. From this task the student’s self-confidence and willingness to take risks with their learning was increased as all opinions were acknowledged and valued. As a teacher I was also able to build a positive relationships with each student by being able to know and value their way of thinking. Through this activity I learnt about the students diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds. I believe that my ability to create a learning environment that is supportive and productive would be very beneficial in a school like Wyndham Central College. The above activity engaged all students, strengthened and developed their communication skills and also built a strong united learning
