Kids are not often kind, they do not listen to rules, they think they are better than others. It takes time and trial to change into a kind person. Often in literature, the protagonist changes from the beginning to the novel to the end of the novel. The protagonist changes after a hardship or issue. In Roland Smith’s “Peak” Peak matures from a selfish child to a selfless man, when struggling to climb Everest. While Peak is in New York, he thinks he is better than everyone. Peak feels that rules do not apply to him. Peak decides to climb a 800 foot skyscraper in New York, and he was caught and arrested. “You are under arrest” (5). While Peak and his group are climbing a steep icewall, one of the climber’s ice axe broke. Peak decides to climb down and help the fellow climber. This act could have killed Peak, yet he would risk his own life for a friend. “Got him! I shouted down to Zopa”(202). This quote reveals that Peak saved his fellow climbers life. Also, when Peak is less than 10 feet away from the summit of Everest he lets Sun-Jo reach the top. Even though Sun-Jo was having issues up the whole mountain and Peak saved his life. Peak and Sun-Jo are both 14. They both would be the youngest to make it to the Summit of Everest. Sun-Jo is poor and all Sun-Jo wants to do is go to school. Peak lets Sun-Jo reach the summit and get all the money and fame. “I don’t have a reason for being here. I’m heading back down the north side”(230). This quote shows Peak is letting Sun-Jo to the summit, and Peak just climbs down the mountain, not even reaching the summit after Sun-Jo. He has endured and overcame many fears and struggles, but during this section, we truly acquire an insight of what the little boy is actually like – his thoughts, his opinions, his personality. Contrary to his surroundings, the little boy is vibrant and almost the only lively thing around. I love him! He is awfully appalled by the “bad guys” and shockingly sympathetic toward dead people. For example, when the father raided a house and found food, the little boy suggested that they should thank them because even though they’re dead or gone, without them, the little boy and father would starve. If a child is exposed to kindness and compassion, they start to take on those characteristics, yet if a child is exposed to abuse and hatred, they will take on the negative characteristics. In the novel, Lives of the Saints by Nino Ricci, the protagonist Vittorio Innocente's childhood is ripped away from him through his great suffering. Vittorio's innocence is tainted through the negative impact of his experiences with friends and his encounters with violence and death, thus leading him to mature at an earlier age.
The novel Peak is about a troubled or misunderstood boy who goes to live with his long lost father to get out of going to Juvenile Detention. While living with his father he writes what is going on in his life as a final assignment for his English class. Once moving to his fathers he finds out that his dad has a goal for him to become the youngest person to reach the summit of Mount Everest. I believe peak will succeed but not without a few hurdles along the way. I also think he will learn a lot from his experience with his father and climbing the mountain. From what I read previewing it looks like this book will be a suspense filled, high action novel based on the fictional first person setting. After previewing the novel I think this is a chance I may enjoy the book as I understand the position of being misunderstood.

Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay are great guides for future climbers because they care about the safety of each other, their knowledge of detail, and their decision making skills all make them great guides for future climbers. Tenzing Norgay throughout his account of the climb found in his narrative “The Dream Comes True” talks about how he cared more about the safety of Sir Edmund Hillary than he did of himself. Tenzing states in his narrative that when Hillary was climbing the cliff he belayed Hillary up to the top of the cliff so; the ice would not give away on Hillary. Tenzing also states that he let Sir Edmund Hillary step up on the summit first and then he did. These two actions show that Tenzing Norgay cared more about the safety of Hillary than he did of himself. Even though Tenzing Norgay cared about the well-being of Sir Edmund Hillary, Hillary also cared about the well being of Tenzing Norgay. In Sir Edmund Hillary narrative ‘View from the Summit” he states that he cleared ice out of Tenzing Norgay mask so that Norgay could breathe. He also states that he toke a picture of Tenzing Norgay at the summit holding his ice axe and the flags. Throughout the novel, the protagonist encounters many difficulties when trying to reach his goal of climbing Mount Everest. In Jeannette Walls’ memoir The Glass Castle and Khaled Hosseini’s novel The Kite Runner, this question is tackled through the recounting of Jeannette and Amir’s childhoods from the perspectives of their older, more developed selves. In the novels, an emphasis is placed on the dynamics of the relationships Jeannette and Amir have with their fathers while growing up, and the effects that these relations have on the people they each become. The environment to which they are both exposed as children is also described, and proves to have an influence on the characteristics of Jeannette and Amir’s adult personalities. Finally, through the journeys of other people in Jeannette and Amir’s lives, it is demonstrated that the sustainment of traumatic experiences as a child also has a large influence on the development of one’s character while become an adult. Therefore, through the analysis of the effects of these factors on various characters’ development, it is proven that the experiences and realities that one endures as a child ultimately shape one’s identity in the future.

In the nonfiction novel, Into Thin Air, by Jon Krakauer, he documents his journey to the summits of Mount Everest and ultimately accuses himself of holding responsible for the disaster on the mountain. After realizing only one-fourth of the people that climbed to the summits on May 10, 1996, made it back down to base camp alive, Krakauer theorizes why that was so. He attributes most of the reason for the disaster to the erratic weather, along with hubris, who wanted the thought of leading a group to the mountain. Despite those reasons, there is no ultimate reason for the deaths documented in the book, but bottom line the climbers that died didn’t thoroughly comprehend the danger they were going to encounter as a consequence that contributed to the disaster.

Everest is an unbelievable mountain that has taken the lives of a number of the greatest climbers in history. It was my job to ensure that clients make it up that treacherous mountain safely. My name is Rob Hall. I was the main guide and cofounder of a climbing company called Adventure Consultants. My friend, Gary Ball, and I used to be professional climbers. Together we succeeded in climbing to the highest summit on each of the seven continents in seven months. This was our greatest achievement. After this, we decided to start our own company guiding clients up large mountains. In May 1992, we successfully led six clients to the summit of Everest. Unfortunately, Gary died of cerebral edema in October 1993 during an attempt on the world’s sixth-tallest mountain. He died in my arms and the next day I buried him in a crevasse. All of these characters are in need of change. Because of their need for change, their lives will become much better. They are filled with wonder and awe about the world around them. No matter what type of person, everyone will encounter changes. It is part of the natural process. A person is encouraged to make these changes for the good. Sammy, the boys, and Miss Emily all encounter changes in their lives that fulfill their need to become something different.
When I was younger the world was such an innocent, delightful place. People were kind, and always willing to help. As I have grown I have found that my views of the world and the people in it have changed; I don 't find it to be as innocent or delightful. I have slowly become to notice the wicked around me.
