Paulo Freire's Model of Education
Paulo Freire, and educator from Brazil, preached a style of learning that raised many questions and confrontations. He spoke of rising to the needs of the oppressed and our duty to give them the education they need to succeed. He believed in having the poor rise together and make themselves known. He saw it as the job of those who are educated to take to the impoverished and enlighten them by means of an equal, one on one relationship, where dialogue is stressed. He also saw the importance of venturing into the world and gaining life experience. All of these components represent the Freireian model of education, a style being noted by many top educators.
Freire's model of education includes a structure involving stress being placed on the importance of dialogue. Freire believes that in the relationship between teacher and student, there needs to be an emphasis on a shared learning process instead of the typical lecture style many teachers use. Drawing from my own experience, I agree with Freire. Lessons in which there is some feedback wanted from the teacher by the students always give me a better understanding of the lecture at hand. If I were to sit in a classroom and be talked at, not only would I be annoyed, I would also gain less from the style of instruction. In the purely lecture style, the teacher is unable to correctly ascertain whether or not the students really understand the material since she/he is looking for no feedback from them. This style of teaching also prevents any sort of self-confidence to be learned from the lesson since students aren't able to put forth their own thoughts and opinions on the subject matter.

Although Paolo Freire worked mostly with the impoverished of Brazil, there is no question in my mind that his ideas are valid and could shed some hope in our own society. It is time we realize that education is the prime motivator for living a healthy, more meaningful life. If those of us who have the ability could take the time to help teach those in need, using a style like Freire's that they would benefit from, there is surely going to be some positive changes in our society. Freire is seen as one of the greatest educators, and it is clear why. His ability to step away from the situation and look towards the ignored shed light on a subject that was in desperate need of attention.
Douglas talks about how people who refuse to learn about their situation do not want to face their oppression. However, Freire says nearly the same thing just that students believe they know everything from the whole banking concept idea. Another similarity that both these pieces present is the value of education in society. Douglas talks about the education prospective from his point of view in the 1800s which is very different from now but he still represents an argument. People should want to learn how to read and get a better understanding on their unfortunate circumstances. However, Freire’s point of view is from the late 1900s which is more recent then Douglas. Freire talks about how teachers need to change their style of teaching so students become more active in the classrooms. However, these pieces can be very different based on what is the social problem in both articles. Douglas faces the problem of race, since Douglas is African he was unable to learn how to read and write unless the lessons were given in secrecy. When Douglas learned how to read and write he tried to teach his people and they refused to so he lost faith and trust in everyone. Education is supposed to be an “experience”. Herr and Paolo Freire are both influential philosophical authors who understand have somehow looked beyond the lines when it comes to education. Herr has learned more through personal experience while Freire hasn’t exactly discussed how he as acquired such knowledge, but is on the right track because he has similar attributes to Herr. This is why there are little stakes between choosing a theory over the other. However, there are some. While choosing Herr over Freire, students will have more of a wide-broad selection of freedom to explore the greatest depths of their imagination to become successful. Through Freire’s “ The Banking Concept of Education,'; we see the effects this concept has on it’s students and also we see the effects that the alternate concept, problem-posing has. The ‘banking’ concept allows the students to become vessels of knowledge, not being able to learn at a creative pace. By using communism, seeing through how education is taught in the classroom, it is parallel to Freire’s ‘banking’ concept. We can see that both ideas are similar and both were harmful to the human mind. While ‘banking’ poses the threat of creative growth and power, Marxism, which applies Marx’s ideas to learning in a communistic way, it creates the threat of never being able to learn.
In Paulo Freire’s essay “The Banking Concept of Education” he talks about how in education there is no conversation between the teachers/professors and their students. In this essay there are a few points I do disagree with, such as that there are some class in which there cannot really be any conversation or discussion, for example mathematics cannot be disproven because there are theorems and concrete facts, so teachers and professors have to teach for memorization. Another reason I disagree with Freire’s way teaching is because in the banking concept Freire is against when teachers are just telling students things and they are regurgitating them, but some students learn better using memorization for learning in the class room and also when studying. The next point I disagree with in Freire’s essay is he doesn’t really look at it from the teachers stand point, because in the United States at least the teachers are now forced to only teach certain points in their subject because of all the standardize testing that they now have in place, specifically grade school. The last thing in Freire’s essay that I disagree with is how he seems to kind of put down teachers.

Pedagogy of the Oppressed is a nonfiction book by Brazilian author Paulo Freire. The book is best known for its philosophical concepts on oppression as it pertains to education. Since the book 's first publication in 1978 it has become a worldwide staple for educators and activists alike, who strive to conquer the problem of oppression in its many facets of life. Pedagogy of the Oppressed is an eye-opening and life changing book that should be a requirement for all future educators in order to ensure success in creating a liberating and humanizing education system.
In the article, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Paulo Freire disagrees with the way education is being conducted because students are not given the opportunity to think for themselves. Teachers do all the thinking, and students are expected to store all the information. Freire describes the education system as the banking system, an act of depositing. Freire says the banking system is the wrong method because it hinders intellectual growth. He then proposes a new method of “problem posing” education which he believes is more effective and fair. With this method, students are responsible for understanding the materials they are being taught instead of adapting the teacher’s style.
Freire wrote of education from a more political point of view, with words like oppressed and freedom in titles of his books. In his home country of Brazil, the 1960’s were important years both educationally and politically, which probably inspired Freire’s writing. In 1964, a military dictatorship took control of Brazil (WEBSITE), and in the same year, Freire was imprisoned and then exiled from the country. This would definitely have inspired Freire to write about education with the thought of freedom snuck in between the lines. Freire’s audience of the time would not have been in Brazil until it was published there in 1974, however it was published in Portuguese, English and Spanish (Readings for Writers). Teachers and students alike were able to relate to relate to The “Banking” Concept of Education in the late 1960’s and they still can relate to it in modern times. Students relate to the feeling of being oppressed and disrespected. Teachers will connect with Freire’s purpose by realizing that they actually do need to teach using his proposed problem-posing method.
