In many modern societies, people strive to become a professional. A professional is a person who job entails usually goes through specialized training; a lot of times at the graduate level. Then they need a certification to practice their profession. Their job usually gives them occupational control, so they are able to be their own boss. Also, their job tends to have a lot of job security due to the fact that they are their own boss and have training that many other careers do not have. Lastly, the high level of education needed to become professional leads to an elitism within the profession and a commitment to the craft with the oath . With the new hybrid professionals brought a new system for how professionals were suppose to do their job. One of the main differences of the new system was a partial loss of autonomy for the jobs of professionals in public service. Autonomy is important to being a professional because professionals are usually independent workers from the rest of the workforce. Autonomy is a part of occupation, which is a key part to what makes a professional, since it has to do with control of ones job. One example of a professional that lost some autonomy after the implantation of the hybrid professional was social workers in a government’s child welfare agency. When a more bureaucratic style was put in place, their role within the department was assigned to them. Further, the social workers were not allowed to make decisions about the client. This is a loss of autonomy because social workers in the past were able to choose their own responsibilities and make decisions about the fate of their own client. The whole point of a social worker is to decide what is the best situation for a client . Another example of a professional that lost some autonomy is NHS doctors. After the managers were put in place, they had to be approved by the manger to use hospital resources . In the past, if a doctor wanted to give a patient an x-ray, they could do it with out asking anyone. This is a loss of some autonomy because their actions are being controlled. Thus, the establishment of the hybrid professionals changed the role of the professional in public service by taking away some of their autonomy because professionals like social worker lost the ability to make a
