The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie is the work of fiction that has helped me most understand the complexity of the world. The novel discusses topics like race, poverty, privilege, and culture. I have lived in the same city since I was born which has made it a bit difficult to be exposed to other cultures and ways of living. My English teacher assigned Alexie’s novel to us in 2016 and ever since I began reading, my perspective on life has changed. The main character, Junior, is a Native American who lives on a reservation with his parents and grandmother. He is academically superior to his other students, but is also underprivileged. Junior lives in poverty and is bullied by the other Native Americans on the reservation. This only increases when Junior decides to switch to a school with better academics, twenty-two miles off the reservation. Junior discusses his struggles throughout the novel and explains what it is like to be in poverty, something that I am fortunate enough to not understand. The main assignment that piqued my interest in female playwrights was when my English teacher assigned a project to point out all of the motifs in Othello and include examples. Going through the play line by line made me think more about what the characters were saying, and which characters were saying what. I noticed the female characters were significantly less important than the male characters. Even though Desdemona and Emilia are both dynamic, strong characters, they are made out to be much weaker. This made me consider if female characters are better represented in plays written by women. I would like to pursue research about female playwrights such as Agatha Christie, Sarah Kane, and Alice
