In A Beautiful Mind, John Nash is a brilliant mathematician who goes to Princeton in order to receive his doctorate. After he proves Adam Smith wrong, his professor explains how he can have any placement he wants. So he ended up working for the United States government, becomes best friends with his roommate, falls in love with one of his students, and has some frustrating times. Unfortunately, some of the most important parts of his life turn out to be not real.
During his time at Princeton, he becomes really close with his roommate, Charles Herman. After he graduates, Nash is asked by the United States government to solve a code they have been receiving. His schizophrenia is specifically paranoid schizophrenia. This abnormal condition includes delusions or hallucinations that normally have to do with persecutions or grandiosity (Myers 591). Nash’s delusions include Parcher, a government official, Sherman, his “roommate”, and Marcee, Sherman’s niece. Parcher made Nash believe that he is working for the United States government to figure out what the Russians are planning. Parcher and Nash get shot at, which intertwines with paranoid schizophrenia because Nash began to think that the Russians were going to kill him. As a result, he didn't want the lights in the house on and he wanted his wife to go live with her sister. Passionate love is portrayed in this film when they first fell in love. John and Alicia would kiss a lot, talked about having intercourse, and would talk in a way that the other person understood but everyone else found it strange. Companionate love is shown when Alicia and John get married and then he is diagnosed with schizophrenia. Alicia admits that the love is not always there but there is enough for her and that she has turned into someone that loves him. This is companionate love because John showed her no affection and sat around all day at the house or was hospitalized, but she still loved him because she had hope that he would get better. The movie did illustrate equity in the wrong way because John did not balance out what Alicia was doing. He did not provide for the family, take care of the baby, show his wife affection, and he wasn’t honest about the delusions. Later on, A Beautiful Mind did show how John wanted to become better so he could help his wife and be there for her so he did acknowledge that the equity wasn’t
