Longboarding
I am flying! There is some turbulence and quick turns. I am on a longboard. If you practice a lot you can go really fast and get really good! Lots of people love doing slalom and downhill races on longboards. Do you know how many types of longboards there are? Well, there are slalom, downhill, cruisers and basic longboards. Back in Oahu, Hawaii longboarding and skateboarding were called sidewalk surfing.

The structure of a longboard has changed a lot through the years. Longboards are a longer form of a skateboard. Longboards are used for slalom and downhill racing. Unlike a longboard, a skateboard is used for doing tricks. However, longboards go farther with one push. During the 1950’s when skateboarding first got it’s legs it was a very popular activity to take part in during vacations to ocean side tourist attractions, or as an activity after surfing. Yet, by 1965, skateboarding had diminished in popularity completely, therefore almost every skateboard manufacturer went out of business. . During this time the only people who even wanted to skateboard were surfers who needed something to ride to practice their surfing while the waves were flat. Due to the fact that there were no skateboards being made or sold, those who wanted to skate had to take it upon them-selves to manufacture their own boards. Using any kind of scrap they could find to build a usable board out of, such as metal scrap pieces or old planks. These determined surfers had to unscrew the trucks and wheels off of roller skates and attach them to the bottom of their boards. And because these kids were from very poor families for the most part, and next to non had jobs of their own, they had to resort to taking the trucks and wheels off the roller skates secretly in the stores. Throughout time, the progression and evolution of snowboarding has increased greatly. It has gone from non existence in the late 1970’s, to one of the most watched action sports in a matter of thirty-five years. The upward takeoff and popularity of snowboarding relies on two people, Jake Burton and Shaun White. Jake Burton back in 1977 had the vision for what snowboarding would be, but Shaun White had what it took to manifest that vision. Evidence has shown that time brings change in sports, history has repeated itself with snowboarding, this history reflects the time & changes that has occurred in America.
Interestingly enough, snowboarding was invented by Sherman Poppen in North Muskegon, Michigan, back in 1965. Nowadays, snowboarding is considered one of the most popular winter sports among teenagers. On the other hand, there are many people that don’t have the slightest idea how to ride a snowboard straight down a hill. There are four steps to learn the basic skills of snowboarding.

That thing was probably the most horrible thing I have ever seen. I have never been in contact with such a space consuming thing. It moved with a lack of elegance and fluidity. Snowboarders are probably the most annoying people on the earth. Don’t we have enough board related sports? Who had even invented the art of snowboarding? I had first learned to ski at the age of six, and had never even thought of learning how to snowboard. Its amazing how a sport can be taken from being called “the next big failure” to being a Winter Olympic sport in the span of just a decade. The journey to make snowboarding considered a ligament sport was long and hard, but with pioneers such as Sherman Poppen, Tom Sims, and Jake Burton it was well accomplished. Snowboarding made its Winter Olympic debut with the giant slalom, and the halfpipe event in 1998. Todd Richards spoke for snowboarders around the world when he said, “"We have been on this crazy quest for legitimacy for so long. The Olympics are going to bring a legitimacy into this sport like no one can comprehend.”” (Shipley) Finally, snowboarders everywhere have gotten the legitimacy they deserve.
One day this group of long borders had stopped in front of me at a stop sign where I was crossing at, and I was a very shy kid but I asked them if I could join them. An older guy with them named mike said “sure”. From that point on he made me a custom board and gave me gloves to use and taught me how to longboard. Ever since that time iv burned through two pairs of longboarding gloves that I bought and I don’t want to buy my third because they don’t seem like an expensive thing to make.

One way I succeeded was by practicing. Everyday I would go to the hill in my neighborhood and practice. I would practice stopping, keeping my balance, and locking my ankles in place so my board wouldn’t shake. I would spend all evening after school riding down that hill and if it was the weekend, I would be outside all day! I brought my skateboard with me everywhere and I would practice on any hill I saw until my legs and feet hurt, I was determined to ride down that hill.
Boarders and skiers have differences and similarities in their equipment. Snowboarding requires only one piece to guide you down the slopes, where skiing uses four. In skiing you require two slender pieces of fiberglass along with two poles. Snowboarding, with its single wide piece of fiberglass, uses bindings to lock your feet onto the board leaving no room for a scavenger hunt your equipment on the slopes. When you fall in snowboarding you have three less things to worry about. Instead of a plastic boot used by skiers, snowboarders use custom fitted boots with all the flexibility you need. Snowboards and skis are made out of the same material and they both require waxing. Like some skis, snowboards are carved upwards on both tips of the board for freestyle movements. The equipment is made for the boarder or skier to use on the same slopes.
At the age of 15, Amy Purdy decided that she loved to snowboard. When she started snowboarding, she learned to have confidence in herself and love all the great things about life. When Amy was 19, she was excited about her future and what was ahead, but never thought about what happened next. At the age of 19, Amy had Neisseria meningitis, which led to the failure of her kidneys and the removal of her spleen. But, it also caused the amputation of both of her legs when her body went into shock. Her body stopped the blood flow to her legs to help save her organs. But, she is very healthy to this day. Before, during, and after this tragedy popped into her life, she knew that snowboarding would always be a part of her life forever. When she was in the hospital, all she could think about is how she’s going to snowboard again and what it’s going to take to get back on a board. Before Amy lost her legs, she was a massage therapist who loved to snowboard and wanted to see the world. With her future changed, Amy was still determined to do the same things she did before, but just differently. She knew she couldn’t quit, because quitting meant giving up things that were most important in her life. While Amy was in the hospital, she claims her doctor said, whatever you believe in, think about it right now. When that happened, Amy thought in her head about love. She believed in loving life, loving each other, and loving to snowboard. Now, this is what inspires her today. Even though she loved snowboarding, she never thought about going to the Olympics until after she lost her legs. She went to the 2014 Sochi Paralympics and won a bronze medal. She also started Adaptive Action Sports to create opportunities for people with physical disabilities...
When we took our vacation to Minnesota, we spent most of our time out on the water.
