While the people of Spain were driving cars and flying planes the people of Papua New Guinea were still in the stone age. Why is this? Why couldn’t Papua New Guinea advance their technology like the rest of the world? For civilizations to be equal they need to be able to develop at the same pace, this didn’t happen due to everyone not having the same geography. Most people believe inequality comes from race, intelligence, and religion. In the end inequality simply comes from geography. The Europeans had an advantage because their latitude gave them the climate to grow wheat and have domesticated animals. With these they had plenty of time to become specialists and develop steel. Places that have animals that can be domesticated will begin to develop faster because they will have more time. Only 14 animals have been successfully domesticated and they all meet 5 specific requirements: they are all herbivores because you don’t want to raise more meat for the meat you need. Also, they have to be sexually mature within 1-2 years of birth because you don’t slaughter an animal until it has reproduced. They also need to get along with humans because there is no point in being around an animal all the time if it wants to hurt you. If an animal is under 100 pounds it can’t be domesticated because it wouldn’t be strong enough to do work and probably wouldn’t have very much meat. Finally, an animal needs to be able to have a social hierarchy because humans need to be able to show dominance over the leader so that they can control the whole group of animals. Animals that have all of the qualities to become domesticated have many benefits. They give good protein, they work on the farm, grazing clears fields, and their dung helps fertilize crops. Animals working on the farm and fertilizing the crops benefited the people of the Fertile Crescent because they improved the production of the agriculture freeing more people to become specialists. Most of the domesticated animals came from the Fertile Crescent so they had a huge head start and many benefits over Papua New Guinea who didn’t have any. Papua New Guinea didn’t have any because they didn’t have the right climate to support domesticated animals. Civilizations that have the right latitude with the right climate and have domesticated animals have an advantage.
