In spite of finding Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games in the young adult section of any bookstore like Barnes and Noble, this book series has captured an audience much larger than the one it was written for. The story has enthralled individuals of all age and genders since its publication in 2008 (Collins). Perhaps so many people are drawn to the series is due to Collins’ revitalization of dystopian fiction, and the amount of creativity and intricacy in the dystopia of Panem. Many adult readers could be drawn to distinguishable traits that Panem resembles to the real world, or Collins’ discussion of socioeconomic inequalities that run parallel to one's current existing in reality. This same inequity that is observed in America everyday. Collins made a point that Panem is post-apocalyptic America, and distinguished the two classes that existed in this world. Capitol citizens or District citizens whichever socioeconomic class an individual was born into would be the one they stayed in. When Katniss described the electric fence that surrounds District 12 and trespassing out of it was illegal (Collins 4-5). The fence is the first indicator of the social control the Capitol has over the Districts. Keeping them divided and prohibited them from ever communicating with each other in order to inhibit their cooperation and reliance on the Capitol. The same underlying social division exists in the very nation that The Hunger Games was written in. When Gary Ross’ 2012 adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ famous novel ‘The Hunger Games’ exploded on screens, it was received as an action-packed, thrilling story of survival, determination and over-coming corruption. Audience’s watched in equal parts awe and horror as Katniss was thrust into Panem’s battle arena and fought for justice, family and friendship. However, if we as an audience think more critically about the film; if we think beyond the wild costumes, gripping action and skilful performances, we can see that the story explores complex philosophical ideas that strongly relate to the experiences of humanity in the real world.
Human life in the story is not valued in this setting either, since teenagers are thrown into arenas every year to kill each other just for sheer amusement of the government officials. The main city that is within the capitol conforms to the same thought process and and behavior, making them appear dehumanized to outsiders. The citizens of the capitol don’t question anything the government does, and worships them to the point of referring to them as ‘peace keepers.’ Going outside of the barrier is feared, as well as expressing any independent thought because of every district being under surveillance by the government. The whole concept of having the Hunger Games is to spread propaganda and to make light of the bigger districts and officials. They use technological control to add unnatural elements into the arena such as programmed wolf-dogs, genetically made death wasps, and fire blasts. The cameras watching every district constantly is also a form of this type of control. The society in this series is controlled by corrupt bureaucrats by forcing everyone to give to the government in order to have food, leaving many places poor and destitute. In society rules are made so no one gets hurt and so that there is a standard of living we can all abide by; however, in The Hunger Games and “The Lottery” the rules are set to do the opposite. The rules made by “the game makers” are in place to cause chaos, death, and fear among the citizens in both stories. A rule of significance in each story is that everyone must be present for the “reaping.” Although each story has different reasons as to why everyone must be present the consequences are implied to be the same. In The Hunger Games the accumulation of potential tributes serves two purposes. The main purpose of gathering everyone and putting them in a small area is that the Capitol thrives off of power. The most evident example of the Capitol’s thirst for power is when Katness Everdeen mocks the Capitol by saying; “Look how we take your children and sacrifice them and there’s nothing you can do. If you lift a finger, we will destroy every last one of you” (Collins, 19). By herding everyone into a small area it shows that the people in the Districts have no power and are merely lambs to the slaughter in the Capitol’s eyes. The second purpose being that the hunger games reaping serves as a census for the Capitol. Before the children are lined up in front of the stage they are counted, inspected, and sorted according to age then all the information the peacekeepers collect go to the Capitol. However the lower class, proles and Outer Party they face hunger, wear shabby clothing, and work blue collar jobs. While the Ministry of Plenty calculates surplus of materials and production, in actuality many of Outer Party members and proles lack basic necessity items. This leads to the illegal trading in the black market which could get the Outer party members arrested. The Hunger Games also has a similar society because they have the Capitol members that live a posh, luxurious life while the district citizens do the laborious work. Capitol members have no care for living a meaningful life because they purge their food, dress in ridiculous clothes, and have an absurd adoration for television. This extreme difference in the two classes emphasizes the severe mistreatment and oppression that occurs. Also it shows that no change in society can come for the oppressed because the elite citizens remain oblivious to real-world problems while the lower class continues to stay too impoverished to rebel. In The Hunger Games District 12 gives the capital a very negative connotation because in the movie katniss shows everyone in her district that there is life outside of coal mining. In the movie when Katniss and Peeta get on the train they look amazed to see the surplus of deserts and fruits, but Effie chuckles and acts like it’s no big deal. This part of the movie shows how classism has taken over to the point where fruit is a luxury to district 12 but is normal to the capitol. I think that the author was smart to put this part of the movie in because it really shows the economic difference between district 12 and the capitol. This section shows the difference in perspective between katniss and peeta to the people of the capital because even the way they see kinds of foods shows marxist theory at work.
The Hunger Games, a film based off of a novel written by Susan Collins, was released in March of 2012. The film, and the book it was based on, chronicles the struggles of a girl named Katniss Everdeen, a girl who lives in a poverty stricken province or “District”, until untimely circumstances forces her to play in the Hunger Games, a gladiatorial like contest where children between the ages of 12 and 18 are forced to fight to the death. A contest that was set up by an oppressive and authoritarian government, and has thus far been sustained via the forced obedience of the rebellious Districts, the brainwashing and conditioning of Districts 1 and 2, and the conditioning of the residents of its Capitol. The movie has a variety of messages, most especially in regards toward social control and social conditioning. With these ideas in mind, a case could very well be made that The Hunger Games, throughout its two hour long run time, shows a very realistic look at a socially conditioned society and what humanity can become with the right amount of conditioning and control by an authoritarian force.

In the book The Hunger Games, the social class system set up by the Capitol causes people to be treated very unfairly based on where they are born. The majority of the plot is based around the fact that this society is built on social classes. The population is broken into 13 districts that determine people’s wealth and jobs. There is the Capitol then the remaining 12 districts are numbered 1 through 12. Each of these district is responsible for the production of a certain item. Districts 1 through 4 are wealthy and produce mostly electronics and luxury goods. From there the districts start to get worse and worse all the way down to District 12. In this society, the Capitol has all the power and the money. This gives them complete control over the lives of all the people isolated in their districts.
In a not-too-distant, some 74 years, into the future the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 13 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games; these children are referred to as tributes (Collins, 2008). The Games are meant to be viewed as entertainment, but every citizen knows their purpose, as brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts. The televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eradicate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. The main character throughout the series is a 16-year-old girl from District 12 named Katniss Everdeen.
The Hunger Games- “a futuristic dystopian society [Panem] where an overpowering government controls the lives and resources in twelve different districts” (The Hunger Games). The overpowering government lives in the Capitol of Panem and from there controls the citizens of the twelve districts through propaganda and other means. The Capitol has all of the economic and political power in Panem; they have complete control. The leader of the capitol is the harsh, dictator-like figure, President Snow. President Snow’s methods for keeping order in the districts are through Peacekeepers and the annual Hunger Games. The Peacekeepers are an army that monitors each district. Any sign of rebellion, and the Peacekeepers take care of it, usually by killing the rebel in some way. The annual Hunger Games are used to remind all of the citizens of Panem about the uprising in the now obliterated District 13. The Hunger Games, in a way, brainwashes all of the citizens, but a select few such as Katniss Everdeen, to believe that an uprising would be horrible and is not necessary and that the Capitol does what is best for all of the citizens. In the poorest districts, their labor as miners (District 12) or farmers (District 11) is exploited for the good of the rich while they slowly starve or are injured or killed by their dangerous work. The Capitol, which rules over the districts of Panem, is representative of the bourgeoisie. It has a small population and is incredibly wealthy, reaping the benefits of the districts. Each district must send food, materials, and sometimes labor to the Capitol depending on what their specified district’s role is. In this dynamic the districts represent the proletariat. The Capitol dress lavishly and feast on excessive amounts of food while the districts work hard to maintain life at the poverty line. The Capitol claims to provide “protection” (which is an ideology created by the Capitol) and small amounts of goods in exchange for the work being done by the districts.
