“One moment the world is as it is. The next, it is something entirely different. Something it has never been before” (Rice, 2015). The story of the goddess Pandora has resonated throughout the world as the woman who betrayed the world; the woman who released disease and famine in the world. Pandora made the fatal mistake of opening a box only because wonder took over her of the fabled jewels and power that might be stored inside. But the mishap led to the world we have today, ravaged by greed and filth. The story of Pandora begins when Zeus condemned Prometheus for giving fire to men. The one way he found to destroy Prometheus was having Pandora marry his brother, Epimetheus. Zeus had plans for Pandora that would surely be payback for what Prometheus had done to the world. After Pandora and Epimetheus got married, she became obsessed with knowing what was in the box. As the author of Heroes, Gods, and Monsters of the Greek Myths, Bernard Evslin put it: “But the sunlight lanced through the window, and the box sparkled and seemed to be winking at her.” This shows that the box has a personified attitude towards her in the way that it seems to be calling for Pandora. The box, although not living, has an effect that Pandora cannot pull away from. After days of conflict the magical box, Pandora buried the it in hopes that the calling would stop. This had no effect on its pull, only making the box stronger. The box’s pull only led Pandora to find herself in a battle between the demons released from the aftermath of the opening. By opening the box, she had released demons into the world that had previously been unknown. Diseases and famine had started to attack the world, but yet, she gained the strength to keep one demon in the box, hope. No one had known of hope in the world of constant war and terror of Greek Mythology. But without hope, it was a life well lived. The people did not have the happy outlook on life that things would magically get better. They dealt with daily life and went with the flow. Whatever happened, happened but in today’s society, hope can be a very dangerous thing. When all else seems to fail, the natural human instinct is to turn to hope and pray that everything will suddenly become better. For some people, a false sense of reality is made when all they have left is hope. This can be potentially dangerous and lead to things that will cause tragic events. So in a way, Pandora’s closing of the box at the last minute was the last good task she could
