Palestinian clothing is a unique artifact that is often overlooked by regions of the world outside of the Middle East. Due to its geographic location, Palestine has a rich history of trading culture and religious beliefs, which is expressed through traditional wear. This intermingling of ideas and art brought about a style of attire in Palestine that is related to its neighboring nations, but noticeably distinct in the Arab world. Throughout Palestine and the Arab world, there are many similarities seen in the style of clothing. Notably, the single cloth, body-covering style is very prominent throughout the Arab world. The country of Palestine has historically been a land shaped by religious belief as all three of the Abrahamic religions have sacred landmarks in my country. As these Abrahamic religions spread across the Eurasian continent, those who returned to Palestine brought back their own culture and art styles. Though men’s outfits may not be as explicit in showing these influences as they often are fully white or ivory, in the female iteration of the dishdasha more of these mixed culture designs are evident. Within the designs of our clothing, there is an intricate combination of geometric patterns that are a historically Muslim art style and floral patterns that are a Persian. Furthermore, the folded scarf headwear worn by the women in the region originates from a time before Christianity. So, tourists may see traditional headwear that may resemble those depicted in Christian art. The unification of different aspects of each religion and culture that is evident in our people’s clothing is representative of the diverse population center Palestine is. As clothes are the pinnacle of both cultural and individual expression, our country expresses the unity of western culture and that of the Middle East. Palestine itself is distinctive, as the northern section of the country has rich Mediterranean vegetation, the southern section has a desert, and between these two landscapes; every variety in between. Because there is such a range of climate and elevation, the people who have lived there for millennia have adapted their clothing to match the conditions. In the desert regions, you would see thin, but more complete veiled clothing worn in layers to fend off the sand in the air from lungs and skin. Similarly, in the coastal region there are skin covering veiled clothes, however there are less layers worn because there are less adverse range of climates in the coast. A woman’s outfit consists of a traditional hat and sandals. Their hair is usually tied up in long, thick braids. There are many different views towards Muslim choice of clothing especially wearing the veil. “I wear it believing it is necessary, but someone else can be wearing it believing that she is doing something extra” said Hamna Ahmed. Weaving is a common thread among cultures around the world. Weaving is a way of producing cloth or textile. Today we have machines that weave large-scale textiles at cheap prices. Production of cloth by hand is rarely engaged in today’s Westernized societies. Not many people are thinking about how the fibers are actually constructed to make their clothes. However, in other cultures across the world the tradition of weaving still exists. By comparing three cultures that continue weaving as a part of their tradition we can see similarities and the differences between them. The reasons that each culture still weaves vary, as do the methods and materials. The desired characteristics of the cloth also vary around the world as each culture values different aesthetics.
Within the Middle East, the largest population of the men and women are Muslim. The Muslim religion suggests that women wear a veil or hijab, which is a head scarf that only exposes a woman’s eyes, accompanied by a burqa which is a full body cloak. The sole purpose of the clothing is to cover a woman’s feminine features from men’s eyes. The Qur’an, an Islamic scripture, supports and slightly obligates the uniform by saying that women are to be conservative, “let them wear their head covering over their bosoms, and not display their ornaments.” (Qur’an).
In the Islamic faith, Muslim women are required to dress modestly by God. In the Qur’an, God speaks directly to all Muslim women and says “...guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment (The Qur’an 24:31)”. Muslim women have to wear a hijab, or a head covering, when they are in public places and when they are around men who are not close relatives. In fact, countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar have a mandatory dress code enforced. Muslim women in these countries have to wear a hijab and an abaya, or a full-length, loose fitting garment on top of their clothes. Although God requires Muslim women to dress modestly and Saudi Arabia and Qatar have a dress code, it is entirely their choice on what they would like to wear.
