Palestinian clothing is a unique artifact that is often overlooked by regions of the world outside of the Middle East. Due to its geographic location, Palestine has a rich history of trading culture and religious beliefs, which is expressed through traditional wear. This intermingling of ideas and art brought about a style of attire in Palestine that is related to its neighboring nations, but noticeably distinct in the Arab world. Throughout Palestine and the Arab world, there are many similarities seen in the style of clothing. Notably, the single cloth, body-covering style is very prominent throughout the Arab world. The country of Palestine has historically been a land shaped by religious belief as all three of the Abrahamic religions have sacred landmarks in my country. As these Abrahamic religions spread across the Eurasian continent, those who returned to Palestine brought back their own culture and art styles. Though men’s outfits may not be as explicit in showing these influences as they often are fully white or ivory, in the female iteration of the dishdasha more of these mixed culture designs are evident. Within the designs of our clothing, there is an intricate combination of geometric patterns that are a historically Muslim art style and floral patterns that are a Persian. Furthermore, the folded scarf headwear worn by the women in the region originates from a time before Christianity. So, tourists may see traditional headwear that may resemble those depicted in Christian art. The unification of different aspects of each religion and culture that is evident in our people’s clothing is representative of the diverse population center Palestine is. As clothes are the pinnacle of both cultural and individual expression, our country expresses the unity of western culture and that of the Middle East. Palestine itself is distinctive, as the northern section of the country has rich Mediterranean vegetation, the southern section has a desert, and between these two landscapes; every variety in between. Because there is such a range of climate and elevation, the people who have lived there for millennia have adapted their clothing to match the conditions. In the desert regions, you would see thin, but more complete veiled clothing worn in layers to fend off the sand in the air from lungs and skin. Similarly, in the coastal region there are skin covering veiled clothes, however there are less layers worn because there are less adverse range of climates in the coast. To contrast with the desert and coastal regions, in the snowy mountains of Palestine, the men and women wear thicker embroidered clothes that are made of wool.
