“THE ROLE OF THE ARTIST CONSTANTLY CHANGES AS THEY RESPOND TO THEIR WORLD”
The role of the artist has dramatically changed over time as they react and respond to their changing world. “Painting (should be) experimental about the relationship between painting society & between painting & the state of the city, the state of human kind”. – Baudelaire. The artist has a very diverse role based on whether they are past or present, where the artist is situated and the different cultures that surround them and influence them, Monet, Picasso and Christo and Jean Claude all have different roles within art because the role of the artist is constantly changing.

As influenced by Paul Cézanne and Henri Rousseau, Monet, archaic and tribal art Picasso followed the ideologies of the modernism art movement that Monet set and stated the modernist art movement Cubism 1907, along side Braque which was one of Picasso’s good friends at the time. The name ‘Cubism’ originated from a comment made by the critic Louis Vauxcelles who, in 1908 described Picasso’s paintings as reducing everything to “geometric outlines, to cubes”. Picasso’s role within cubism changed as he responded to the changing world around him. Cubism juxtaposed different and or multiple views of the same object on 1 canvas the figures looked fragmented and abstracted like a disorganized jigsaw puzzle. Picasso called this deconstruction and reconstruction of reality, which was a direct link to Picasso’s role as an artist and his response to his world. Picasso’s connection between his role as an artist and the world was that, Picasso collected tribal masks from Africa which where angular stylised & abstracted which perfectly reflected his style of cubism, and how his role as an artist has changed due to the modernization of the world and different cultures influencing him.
