a. Explain your results. What do they mean to you? Did anything surprise you? Using the PATCH Assessment scale to assess my attitudes toward computers in health care, I scored a total of 80 points. Scoring 80 points puts me in the category of, “Confident of ability to use a variety of computer programs. Sees computers as beneficial in the development of society. Enthusiastic view of the potential of computer use in healthcare.” These results mean that I feel confident while using computers. I am knowledgeable about them and have used them throughout my education. I am very familiar with doing class work online, typing papers, and searching for information on the internet. While rating the statements I felt as if I knew I was going to score high. I’ve dealt with computers and technology most of my life. I do have that advantage over some of the older generations because I am one of the younger ones. I enjoy technology and find it very helpful. I’ve seen change, and have been able to keep up with it. I can see how it can be difficult for someone older to have a harder time converting from a paper chart to an electronic one when the advances in technology have happened so fast. I’ve just been one to have grown up in all the change. I have adapted well and I’m excited where technology will keep taking us in health care. However, the Nursing Informatics Competencies Self-Assessment took me by surprise. I did not realize how many applications that were unfamiliar to me.
