Through out the guest talk, I have had better knowledge on the current practice, future goal and the operation of Oxfam. I was also better informed on how business cooperation can contribute in minimize inequality instead of worsening the current situation.

Oxfam had been working on development programs, advocating equality, human and disaster management and global citizen education. On the local level, Oxfam places it’s concern in corporate social responsibility, poverty in workers, women, elderly, ethnic minority, and all kinds of inequality. On the global level, Oxfam work on advocating fair trade, global poverty and inequality, climate change, and also corporate social responsibility.

For instance, girls are expected to out perform boys academically, but were rarely seen in male-dominated career such as engineering. Women also face high expectations in maintaining housework and their own career at the same time. Yet, I think Oxfam can also work on solving the root and promote gender inequality in working environment at the same time. In my opinion, Oxfam could joint-hand with book publisher and redesign educational materials, sending messages on guiding children to rethink the role of different gender in the society, encourage them to go for their dream regardless of the social perspectives and so on. Oxfam can also consider working with the Hong Kong government in launching advertisement and competitions for high school and college students to join in making videos in regard to gender equality promotion. Besides, Oxfam could also promote gender equality in workplace to Business Corporation. For instance, Oxfam can give out talks in different companies in promoting gender equality, stating the importance and benefits of having an equal working environment. Companies itself could also organize workshop in spreading the message of workplace equality regardless of gender and race. I have once worked part-time as a sales associate in an American chain store and I was requested to participate in a 5-10 minute workshop every time before work. One of the topics is about gender and race equality at work and our manager would give us suggestions on how to make each other feel included regardless of sex and race. For instance, managers would situate us in situations in communicating with colleges from different race
