People are in charge of their own fate. Why would I say a statement like that, because Kate Chopin and Ambrose Bierce, both used irony to pull in the reader to their stories of “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, and “ The Story of an Hour”. To show the reader that some people can force their fate when they begin to believe to hard. In “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, Peyton Farquhar's belief was that he would escape his destiny and truly be happy. Farquhar believed that while he was hanging, that the rope around his neck would snap and broke, that he would escape from his punishment and live happily with his family. Ambrose Bierce, tells this story in a way that readers can see many different elements of literature. The irony in this story is when Farquhar was set up for sabotage, but in that moment he was happy… “ perhaps he has merely recovered from a delirium. Mallard’s belief is that she will finally be happy without her husband. Mrs. Mallard believes that since her husband has dead in a train accident, that she will be able to live a long life of happiness and be free. The irony of this story is when Mrs. Mallard engages her joy, she soon comes to learn as her husband walks through the door still alive, her happiness takes the best of her life.
