“An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” is one of the best short story written by Ambrose Bierce. This short story has been adapted in numerous version. The most popular version of Bierce short story is the Alfred Hitchcock Presents version. Hitchcock version has lots of similarity and differences compared to the original story. The Hitchcock version, like the original short story, provided more backstory on how the man came to be sentenced to death. Original story and Hitchcock version, both shares similar themes, tones and gives more details of character background. The main difference between Hitchcock version and the original story is the effect of music, but it all depends on how readers and the viewers interpret the story.
At first, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” can be interpreted in lots of different themes. The main similar theme that both, Hitchcock version and the original story shares are about death. No one can know if Peyton Farquhar already dies at the beginning of the story or not. Hitchcock version of the story was so perfect that the viewer had no idea if Farquhar was imagining his escape or not. The viewers and the reader can not differentiate between what was imaginary from what was real until the end. The story and the film switched back and forth between not only the past and the present, but also from reality to imaginary. Farquhar tells of his perceptions, how things “seem” to him, and his imagination instead of reality. The main difference between the original and the Hitchcock version was the music.
