About 1.5 million people are trapped in a 15 square mile area. It seems impossible. However, citizens of Manila, Philippines somehow make it work by residing anywhere possible, no matter how dangerous, unsanitary and crowded. This overcrowded situation affects not only the people, but also the area they populate. Their residence caused all kinds of incidents, whether they are environmental, such as huge floods and wildfires, or inhumane criminal acts such as theft or murder. Implying that if the citizens of the Philippines do not control the growth of their population, then nature itself will do it for them through these slow massacres. Migration and high fertility rates are the main issues the Philippines should focus on. The inhabitants of the rural regions claim to be deprived of opportunities, forcing them to relocate to the cities filled with methods to gain money, fame, or power. Furthermore, the government refuses to do anything to restrain the growth of fertility rates until recently. The government is currently taking action by distributing free birth control materials to poor families which, naturally, are the people with a lot more children than others. It is not yet determined if this new law will make a change for the better, but it appears that the Philippines has decided to take the first step to become a cavernous country.

Overpopulation is one of the many problems Philippines is facing today. Under the corruption, the major typhoons, and the drought, the significance of overpopulation is often overlooked. Filipinos need to wake up and realize that the issue is not the government or the environment, but themselves as a whole. They will not solve any of their problems if they continue to be the source. Humans are capable of achieving amazing things. More humans can reach even a higher goal. However, they can also be deadly. And when that happens, overpopulation is destructive.
Some people believe that immigration in the 1900’s was a good thing, however, they would be wrong. The United States government should have restricted the immigrants around that time. In order to solve the overpopulation issue, the government should pay great attention to it. Some policies, such as “ One China policy”, have already been made in China. They have already paid off. For instance, in 1994, the natural growth rate was 11.21‰, but in 1999 it was only 8.77‰ (SFPCC statics). However, China still has a long way to go in this aspect, for the overpopulation is still serious now, just like what have been mentioned in the previous paragraphs.
Over the years, the Philippines has gone from being one of the richest countries in Asia to being one of the poorest. It has experienced growth and development since World War II. The current administration under President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is aiming for a more rapid growth in the coming years. In 2004, the Philippine economy grew by 6.1% surprising everyone. In 2005, the Philippine peso appreciated by 6%, the fastest in the Asian region for that year. At present, the administration is meeting its expected target growth and is continually looking positive for the future.

Many of such policies raised issues surrounding the repression of freedoms and the demeaning of human rights. When the population of people expands we need more natural resources from the environment, so we consume more than we can produce.
The Philippines has long been a country with a struggling economy. Ever since World War II, they have struggled to have a steady government and labor system. Independence did not bring any social changes to the country. The hacienda system still persists in the country, where large estates are farmed by sharecroppers. More the half the population are peasants and 20 percent of the population owns 60 percent of the land. Although the sharecropper is supposed to receive half of the harvest, most of the peasant's actual income goes to paying off debts to the landowner.
