Overcrowding is an issue in today's prisons. One of the main reasons is the war on crime and the phasing out of indeterminate sentencing (Schmalleger & Smykla, 2015). Indeterminate sentencing is where prisoners are more likely to be released early based on conditions such as good behavior and entering into self-improvement programs (Schmalleger & Smykla, 2015). Another reason for overcrowding is stricter drug laws (Schmalleger & Smykla, 2015).
Overcrowding in prison creates many problems. Inmate inactivity is created due to lack of work opportunities. (Schmalleger & Smykla, 2015). We all know inactivity leads to issues such as fighting and complaining. Almost ten percent of prisoners experience some sexual assault (Schmalleger & Smykla, 2015). Then there is the issue of employees becoming involved sexually with prisoners. A federal examination came up with 32 systems to reduce sexual assault (Schmalleger & Smykla, 2015). Reducing prison overcrowding was on the list (Schmalleger & Smykla, 2015).
