Abstract Outside distractions are a major issue with students. They negatively impact student learning and motivation if not handled correctly. Students often get distracted by extracurricular activities, the opposite sex, home life, etc. The common core program is to blame for some of this, but it can normally be combatted with a reasonable workload, and a reasonable due date (with reminders). It is also important to emphasis the course’s importance and have them take responsibility for any subpar work. Each assignment means less time spent doing something more “fun,” and certain subjects simply do not interest them. They often begin to struggle with balancing school, social events, romance, etc. They struggle physically as well when they stop getting the proper sleep and exercise needed. This also becomes a struggle for the instructor, as he or she will try to keep the learner engaged in the lesson from beginning to end. Two general solutions are a sensible workload and a plenty of time/reminders with regards to the due date. This will increases the likelihood that students can maintain their enthusiasm while balancing multiple objectives. While one would hope that students prioritize their assignments, it is also essential to realize that students have other important commitments. When teachers think about how much work is reasonable to assign, they must also ensure that the course material is covered adequately, the students have time for other classed, and that they have time for extracurricular activities as well. Epstein states, “Effective strategies for enhancing learning and motivation are to adjust time or task requirements or those having difficulty and allowing students to plan their schedules and time lines for making progress.” This statement seems to support their …show more content…

It is important to impress upon them how integral math is to the scientific method, and how often the two overlap. It is almost always necessary to use some sort of mathematics to do any type of experiment, and having that gap in their knowledge will hinder them with regards to the subject they love. It is also important to emphasis how much math is needed for day-to-day activities. Balancing a check, paying for food at a register, and creating a budget all rely on basic mathematics.
