This blog will give an overview of the main parts of the dissertation writing process so that you can produce a manuscript that your examiners will enjoy reading. Begin with a strong dissertation outline. In the months before you complete your actual work, you should be thinking about how to best lay out your dissertation, such that you present your strongest arguments in the clearest possible way, especially if it involves a lot of statistics or figures. The references are another section that some students think is not worth spending time on - WRONG! Examiners spot check to ensure that the references cited are in the reference list and vice versa. Ensure that all referencing is consistent throughout a thesis. Also ensure that all figures and tables are correctly labeled and referred to in the text; wrongly labeled figures drive examiners mad! When these basics are taken care of, ensure that you write clearly and concisely, explaining all details. Do not leave holes in your experimental methods or arguments for your hypothesis. Baseball has drastically changed over the years, especially in the cheating scandals of steroids; Babe Ruth set a great example by excelling in the sport and doing it clean, contrasting with Mark McGwire. Their existence shows how society accepted honesty and doing it the clean way in Babe’s era and how society accepts the scandals and dishonesty of Mark’s era.
A working thesis statement should include a rough idea of your topic and the important point you want to make about that topic. Writing this statement at the top of a rough draft or outline and looking at it often can help you remain focused throughout the essay. The industry of beauty pageants is growing rapidly, jeopardizing the continuous work of many women’s rights advocates, throwing away the continuing efforts for equal rights (Miss America, 2011).
How would you feel if your devoted dog was discriminated against based only on what he looked like? Canine breed discrimination is a real problem in today’s society in the United States. There is always an enormous amount of hype when one hears about a dog attack. The first thing people want to know is what kind of dog was involved in the attack. I will always be aware of making an argument that best suits my knowledge and providing evidence to support my thesis statement. I now realize the importance of making an argument because you are stating your stance on the topic at hand. Also, I realize the importance of giving sufficient and appropriate evidence to show the agreeing and opposing views. Learning this at this point in the semester will further my understanding of writing in this course. On the final assignments in this course, I will be sure to state my argument and supply evidence. The experience of learning from this module will positively affect my performance in future writing courses majorly. When I am assigned to write an essay, the first thing I do is panic. I panic because I always seem to run into the same problems with my writing process. I have no central idea. I have no clue what I actually want to write about. When I was younger, I always started by making a web or an outline because thats what my teachers encouraged me to do in school, but I don’t do that anymore. Now I sit in front of my laptop, I take a deep breath, close my eyes, gather my thoughts, and type. I just let my thoughts flow onto the page. When I don’t feel the pressure of writing to an audience, my writing is completely different than it is when I am writing something that I know my professor or peers will read. As I am writing this exact sentence, I don’t quite know where I am going with it. My writing process is unorthodox and unorganized, but it is what I do everytime. When I stop trying to follow the linear model of writing, explained by Nancy Sommers as the process of forming an idea, writing about it, then revising afterwards, I feel that I am more capable of discovering something meaningful within my words. When I am forced to write a thesis statement and base my paper solely on it, it doesn’t come out as good as I think it should. It decreases the potential for my ideas to grow and discoveries to be made. It limits me to a single statement and narrows my thoughts, preventing me from discovery.
