Attention getter: Things such as eating, drinking, going to the dentist or even the doctor’s office can increase a person’s risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Thesis: Alzheimer’s is a serious and degenerative disease that affects the brains and everyday lives of hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Alzheimer’s is a very progressive disease that affects the brain in a variety of different ways. Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that results in irreversible deterioration of memory and cognitive abilities (“Alzheimer Disease”). In 2016, about 48 million individuals were living with dementia worldwide (“Alzheimer Disease”). An article in the Encyclopedia Britannica states, “Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, being responsible for about two thirds of the cases of dementia in patients over 60 years of age. Women are affected twice as often as men” (Robbins). Another article in the Encyclopedia Britannica states, “There are three recognized stages of Alzheimer’s disease: preclinical, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and Alzheimer’s dementia” (“Alzheimer’s Dementia”).
