Our Time [Weidman] In the essay Our Time, John Edgar Wideman starts of the essay basically describing how he grew up and what it was like. Throughout the writing Wideman tells us the story of his brother through his eyes and uses many different voices and points of view. He struggles sometimes in the story with writing the piece because he has to be careful what to say and how he should state things so that people can see it through his Brother Robby’s eyes and not just hear what they want. This essay doesn’t have just one person speaking at a time it has many characters and at times Wideman seems like he is writing a narrative, while critiquing himself. Although some might object that he does these things and makes the story hard to read, I would reply that the way he uses the other character’s voices makes the story more interesting. This issue is important because having his own critiques, while also talking for his brother Robby makes the story interesting. There is one part of the story, that is said by Robby which uses this well “Wind blowing snow all up in my face. Thought I’s bout to die out there. Even the junkies and dealers inside today” (Wideman 455) This quote show how Wideman uses Robby’s voice to start off a story which helps tell the story better, rather explaining it for himself. While some might argue this essay is about Wideman trying to explain his brother’s troubles and showing how bad his life may be, I think this essay is more about how Wideman uses different perspectives to tell the story of his brother. The issue with this is that the people trying to read this essay would say it is hard to follow or it is not a complete story because of the many perspectives he moves around in throughout the story. This is shown by quotes throughout the story and there are many reasons why I believe this
