Orthodontic Braces
“Train Tracks”, “Metal Mouth”, and “Brace Face” are all terms used to refer to people with orthodontic braces. Even through all the teasing, appointments, money, and pain, braces are worth it. Orthodontic braces are the worlds greatest invention because your teeth either make you or break you.
Braces came about in the early 1800s, but humans were practicing orthodontics before Christ. David Evans, DDS, says that many mummified remains, with what researchers believe could have been an early attempt to close gaps in teeth, were discovered by archaeologist early in ancient history. He states, “These remains have a cord made from animal intestines (known as catgut) wrapped or run along the teeth in a very similar style to how modern orthodontists run orthodontic wire along the teeth in an effort to close off gaps.” The Surgeon Dentist, written by Pierre Fauchard, the father of modern dentistry, was published in 1728. We have all had those dentist or orthodontist appointments that were a complete nightmare. Getting poked, jabbed, and pinched in the mouth. Well, I have been thinking since I have had this experience and wouldn’t want anyone else to go through that. Maybe I could become an orthodontist and ensure to my patients that these problems do not happen. I enjoy helping people that I don’t know and being as precise as I need to be, to be an orthodontist. Though I have never had any experience at all with any of this, that is what school is for. I realize that being an orthodontist is the best career choice for me.
Braces date back to even ancient times, they are not a modern day concept. Archaeologists have found mummies with metal bands hugging certain teeth, which were around 400-500 BC. The first documented ligature wire was found in a Roman tomb in Egypt. In a more modern and known time such as when George Washington had his wooden teeth dentist were thinking about bad bites and how they could correct it. Roughly around the 1800s a man named Delabarre marked the start of contemporary orthodontics with the introduction of the wire crib. The wire crib is the wire put in the brackets. As we know braces than and braces now differ quite a bit. In the 1900’s braces were out of gold, platinum, silver, steel, gum rubber, and even wood. The wire was made out of gold! That had a lot of setbacks due to the fact it is a very soft material so constant adjustments were needed. Now, towards the mid 1970’s was the end of the wrap around metal, they had finally come up with a bonding agent to glue brackets on the tooth surface (S, 2002). Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry which involves the prevention and correction of irregularities in the teeth. The ones who practice orthodontics and specialize the field are called orthodontists. An orthodontist has specialized and in depth knowledge about the human teeth and jaws. Providing treatment for people who have problems associated with their teeth and jaws has been their goal. The treatment provided will be varied from person to person depending on their ailment. The orthodontists make sure that our teeth and jaws are in good condition.
Nine times out of ten, the idea of getting braces would instantly be met with resistance and dread by anyone, but more so by teens and young adults. It seems that wearing braces is always followed by the stigma of pain, discomfort, and being labelled as "geeky". But despite the slight pain and discomfort, braces get an important job done--that of straightening crooked, misaligned teeth, or correcting a bite. See, it's not really as bad as you think it is because braces have a purpose. Fortunately, there is now the Invisalign treatment.
Most people believe an orthodontist and a dentist have two extremely similar jobs all because they both work with the human mouth. This, however, is not entirely true. An orthodontist focuses on a patient's mouth, straightening teeth and even jaws when necessary. Orthodontists will always make sure that jaws are properly aligned before recommending braces. The variety of dental instruments that have been invented since the beginning of basic dentistry till modern times is enormous. Dentistry has been around since the Ancient Egyptians, the firsts known dentist was Hesy-Re, who has inscribed on one of his tomb walls “the greatest of those who deal with teeth”. Onward from Hesy-Re, the focus on dental health became a concern, however, it was not till about the end of the 1700’s that dentistry was regarded as true profession. Dentistry during the American Civil War was not the initial interest of the time, the focus was of course on the injured men who would come off the battle field. When one thinks of Civil War medicine they may tend to think of amputations and treating bullet wounds. However,
Orthodontics could completely change in the future as this article states, “In the next fifty years, we might be looking at technology that helps teeth grow in straighter, instead of simply trying to straighten them once they have grown in.” (“What Orthodontics Might Look Like In 50 Years?”). New ideas of how to improve the process of orthodontics is remarkable because the ideas get better and better. Hopefully in the future there will be a way to make teeth grow in straight instead of wasting time with braces and have to spend all the money and time on them.

Time is inevitable, even if you want time to slow down or stop completely, it is simply impossible. Throughout life everybody deals with the factor of time. Some may want to savor a moment or possibly want time to fly by but, no matter what, time moves at the same pace and speed it always has. Time won’t stop just because you want it to, time won’t stop to run on your scheduled time. Time will go on forever and the way you deal with that acceptance is different for everyone. Daisy and Gatsby deal with their past relationship and they both have to decide for themselves what that time span apart did to them and how it affected them. Daisy took that time apart and uses it as acceptance and healing, she develops a family and she seems to have the knowledge that if she didn’t move on now then, she would be missing out on certain things and didn’t want to throw those years away. Gatsby doesn’t fully connect the pieces that time moves on and while his life was on hold for Daisy, little did he know that she has already moved on. Both of those individuals were dealt with the same cards, but it’s what you do with your cards that affects the outcome of the game. You could either, fold your hand and try to find a better hand for later, or you can check and stick with that hand for too long and lose all of your money. There is a beautiful quote by Shakespeare saying, “Time is very slow for those who wait, very fast for those who are scared, very long for those who lament, very short for those who celebrate, but for those who love. Time is eternal” (Shakespeare). Daisy knew when to let go and while she is developing a life for herself, Gatsby is still holding on to what could have been five years ago. During the sixth chapter, George talks about his encounter with the dentist. When he got there, he was very interested in the pictures on the wall of teeth. He couldn’t stop examining each and every picture. When he finally got back to the examining room, the technician took an X-ray of his mouth. After the X-rays, he met his dentist, Dr. Thomas. The dentist showed George the pictures of his mouth, and thoroughly explained all the information from the picture. After discovering it, later he used it in his surgeries. Numerous advances in dentistry were equipment, materials, and techniques came back to back to one another. In 1864 vulcanized rubber was introduced as a substitute for people that could pay for costly gold dentures. The very first dental school to be joined with a university was Harvard University which was in 1867. Most dentists were still being trained in a system of preceptorship with a real established dentist. The very start is licensure in the United States first happened in 1868, with the states New York, Ohio, and Kentucky.
Dentists have been around for thousands of years. Dentistry got its start in the Indus Valley of India And Pakistan. “The earliest history of treating tooth related problems goes all the way back to 7000 BC, where the Indus Valley Civilization shows evidence of treating the mouth for tooth decay. All my life I was asked the question, have I ever had braces before? I never really exactly saw what others seen in my teeth, until one day when I had my first real dentist visit. The dentist office was very interesting, from the way it looked to the way they operated (I always thought the dentist did the same as a doctor). As I went in for my cleaning the dentist saw that I had a couple cavities, I was trying to figure out what was a cavity. How is this affecting my nice teeth? Am I going to lose the tooth?
