The word “organic” refers to the way farmers grow and process their products to follow specific standards regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The purpose of organic farming is to restrain the amount of synthetic chemicals used to fertilize foods (although certain approved pesticides may be used) and reduce environmental pollution by relying on sustainable techniques to enhance the natural features of a farm. Although the research available does not provide enough evidence on their nutrient composition, to remark there is an advantage for a better health, the demand for organically grown food is increasing, and organic farming is revolutionizing the food industry in today’s society. Nevertheless, it is true that synthetic fertilizers are a threat for health, the evidence for such a threat is not sustainable (Knapp). Consumers who wish to have a more nutritious diet to prolong their healthy lives must be aware of the choices they make about what they put on their table. Food is consumed to provide nutritional support for the body, usually of plant or animal origin, and contains essential nutrients, such as fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals that provide energy to the body to maintain life and stimulate growth. Both organic and conventional food contains same essential nutrients when consume, therefore consumer should take into consideration whether organically grown products are affordable for their family. Knapp suggests that “Consumers should think twice about paying extra for organic food.” Documented research disclosed what minimal the health gain is by consuming organic products, but there is evidence that proves having a balanced diet will help someone’s health permanently; in the same way, it will outweigh any potential risk from pesticide consumption. One thing the experts agree on is that regardless of whether consumers choose locally grown, organic, or conventional foods, the important thing is to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. As long as they make a long-term commitment to adding a variety of products and stay active, they will be healthier no matter which way they decide to go for their food. In his, article “What Are You Buying When You Buy Organic?” Shapin exposes and explains the truth behind the word organic. He explains that our view on organic is not a reality. The small farms that we picture in our heads are really just big business in disguise and these big businesses are trying to do good by supposedly not using harmful pesticides. Which are supposed to not damage the environment but in reality they are probably not making any sort of difference. Some people care about the environment, while others are buying taste when it comes to organic food but using different pesticides are going to help the taste, only freshness tastes the best.

For years organic farmers and conventional farmers have feuded over which is superior. Organic farmers argue that their product is more eco-friendly because they do not use the synthetic chemicals and fertilizers conventional farmer’s use. Conventional farmers argue that their product is healthier and yields more. People tend to have stereotypes regarding the two types of farmers. Organic farmers are usually thought of as liberal, hippy, tree-huggers while conventional farmers are usually thought of as right-wing, industrialists. Obviously, some do adhere to this stereotype, but a majority of these farmers are normal, hardworking people. Although these farmers, both believe in their methods, one is no better than the other. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but there is no true superior method of crop farming.
With the world’s population continuing to increase, the demand for food is higher than ever. This increase in food demand also calls for more efficient ways of growing and providing the food. Two methods that are very controversial are the organic and conventional method. While many people support the organic method because of its known benefits, others feel that it is an over inflated industry that cheats consumers out of their money. But recently many studies have disproved those critics. These studies prove that Organic food is a better choice than conventional because it is better for the environment, avoids the use of chemicals, and is generally more beneficial.
Organic food is generally not much healthier than regular fruits and such nutrition wise with a few exceptions. “Higher vitamin C concentrations were found in organic leafy vegetables, such as spinach, lettuce, and chard versus the same conventionally produced vegetables in 21 of 36 (58%) studies”( Foreman). Another unfortunate circumstance on organic food is the price. On average, anything organic is priced higher than non-organic food, and according to Digestive Specialists Inc., it “…costs anywhere from 20 to 100 percent more than regular produce” (Digestive Specialists). The higher price leaves any financially struggling person or family less likely to invest in organic food when there is always a cheaper option available, even if the cheaper product isn’t beneficial to their health. The reason for this, mentioned by Health Research Funding,“…Organic farmers do not use artificial fertilizers, they tend to produce smaller quantities. Their method of farming is also more labor-intensive with weed pulling and crop rotation. And then there is the issue of supply and demand – as the demand for organic produce increases, so does the price” (Health Research Funding). The quality of organic fruits, while being mostly free of pesticides and chemicals, can also have a lot less time to deteriorate compared to non-organic foods. The cause of this switch is due to processed foods being easier, cheaper and faster to make. Artificial nutrition and processed foods have been proven to last longer in market shelves then natural foods. Also, due to artificial additives in processed foods they help satisfy consumers taste more than natural ingredients. The method of producing processed foods is common in today's food industry and helps make money faster and efficiently for companies. Examples of this can be found in all markets that distribute food. Even though processed foods may be easier and faster to make, they are nowhere near as healthy for consumers compared to natural foods.
