Oral Pathology is a specialty branch of dental medicine that is concerned with the detection, treatment and management of diseases that affect the oral region. Its area of specialty also covers the oral and dental treatment of patients that present with medical conditions.
Our oral cavity lies in close proximity to the brain and heart while at the same time it is inextricably connected to our lungs and stomach. If this area is being compromised by an oral disease, it can affect the overall health and wellbeing of our whole body. Extensive and prolonged damage to our oral cavity may even impair our ability for normal daily functions – and diminish our capacity to do the things that we often take for granted like eating, talking and breathing.

Our job is to detect and treat any underlying oral condition or pathological pattern that may pose a future health risk – the most serious of which is oral cancer.
Beyond just checking your teeth and gums, we investigate areas that a general practitioner does not: including your cheek, palate, tongue, face, neck, gum tissue, salivary gland, lip and floor of the mouth. The result is a highly accurate diagnosis in which we are able to determine the onset or development of any oral ailments, their root causes and stage of development. This allows us to treat and manage the effects with higher efficiency and better outcomes.
Evaluation and treatment may include observation, biopsy (removal of suspicious tissue for lab examination), laser removal, or excision. Areas of concern are evaluated under a microscope to confirm a diagnosis.

The exocrine pancreas serves to secrete digestive enzymes into the duodenum. Many people, including tons of children, fight leukemia every day trying to beat this vicious cancer. Without knowing how leukemia is exactly caused, it puts a damper on how to avoid it.

Initially she would perform the exams as learned in school, but now after finding something abnormal, she now does a more thorough check, especially on patients with previous history of cancer. This incident solidified her belief in early detection and proper documentation. By having the information in the patient’s chart Annette could refer back to it and follow up to see if anything has changed since the last visit. Most patients she sees do not have oral cancer but she is able to identify abnormalities and encourage the patient to have them checked to determine if they are precancerous.

Leukemia is a cancer of the white blood cells. It begins in the bone marrow, the soft tissue inside the bones. Within the bone marrow is where white blood cells are created, that help fight off bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms within the body that cause infections. The disease develops to when the white blood cells are being produced out of control. The cells that are being produced do not work properly as they should, they grow faster than a normal cell would and don’t know when to stop growing. Overtime, if not treated properly, the white blood cells will over crowd blood cells, creating a serious problem such as anemia, bleeding and infection. Leukemia cells can spread to the lymph nodes and other organs in the body causing swelling and pain.

Most patients are asymptomatic, but occasionally patients complain of irritation, gagging, or an altered taste. Patients are usually heavy smokers with poor oral hygiene and some have vitamin deficiencies, GI problems, or radiation therapy. Cures range from just brushing the tongue to corticosteroid therapy.
However, on the a recent visit dated 23/12/13 the patient’s gingival condition had deteriorated, presenting with an increased plaque scores of 34% and bleeding scores to 63%. Intra oral examination also showed generalised oedema and erythema throughout in the mouth in response to this increase in plaque bacteria. The presence of supra-gingival calculus on lower anterior teeth and both sites of upper buccal molars and the patients BPE now reads 212 /121, putting the patients caries risk at a ‘High’ status.
