William Golding, the author of the Lord of the Flies gave a Nobel Prize acceptance speech. In this speech he said he was "A universal pessimist but a cosmic optimist." This quote means that Golding is a pessimist in reality but an optimist in comedy and within the universe. This is important because it says there is optimism in some of the most pessimistic ways. There are many negative messages, but some positive messages throughout Lord of the Flies. For example: the fire is a symbol for hope, the conch shell is a symbol for order, and the morals from some of the boys including Ralph, Piggy, and simon are strong positives morals. He argued with Jack that the fire was more important than hunting. When they spotted the ship on the horizon, the fire on the top of the mountain was out. Jack was in charge of the fire but let it go out, because hew as out hunting. He argued that food was more important than getting off the island right then and there. Later in the book, when Jack stole Piggy's glasses, Ralph went to where Jack was up on Castle Rock to retrieve them. This shows that Ralph cares about Piggy, and wants the best for him. This was done out of friendship and love. Even though it was not a success, because Piggy ended up dead and Ralph had to run for his life. Ralph still showed a positive attitude by fighting for what he believed in and what needed to be done. Throuhgout the book, Lord of the Flies, there are a few optimistic moments, but mostly pessimistic moments. Even in the most cynical moments, you and still feel optimistic. One can even try and uplift peoples spirits and make them think that certain things will happen and drive their working habits. William Golding showed these few optimistic tones in a different ways and surrounded them by negative tones. The points that have been said about positive attitudes and the friendship between Ralph and Piggy shows that this book is positive in its own
