“Failure is a great teacher. If you’re open to it every mistake has a lesson to offer (Winfrey).” Oprah Winfrey a common household name has sweeped the nation whether it’s was with her network, magazine, book club, or her TV show. Winfrey’s road to fame was a hard road to travel, there was many obstacles in her way. But, as Winfrey discovered her true passion in life there wasn’t no one stopping her from achieving it. Winfrey’s long road to stardom started out rough, then as she grew many opportunities soon came to her way, and she finally became the leading woman she knew she was.

Winfrey’s grandmother was not going to let Oprah grow up with an education, by the age of three Winfrey had learnt to read, and Winfrey showcased her oratory skills often giving her the nickname “the Preacher (Kashyap and Srikanth 61).” This then started she love affair with speaking and showcasing her talent. But, soon afterwards Hattie Lee fell ill and Winfrey was unable to take care of her grandmother anymore. Winfrey moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin with her mother Vernita; Vernita worked long hours as a maid and had little time for Oprah (Kashyap and Srikanth 61). Vernita didn’t force Winfrey to do well in education and with the absences of parental supervision, Winfrey had a numerous events of traumatic incidents (Kashyap and Srikanth 61). Winfrey from age of six and thirteen had a tormented adolescence; by the age thirteen Winfrey had left home a number of times (Kashyap and Srikanth 61). In Winfrey’s high school career, she was on the high school speech team and also joined the drama club. Winfrey also was in beauty pageants during high school, there she became known for her entertainment skills (Kashyap and Srikanth 61). At the age of seventeen, Winfrey started receiving broadcasting jobs (Kashyap and Srikanth 61). Oprah Winfrey’s first job was at WVOL ( radio station in Nashville), there she worked as a part-time news reader (Kashyap and Srikanth 62). Then after two years in that job, Oprah Winfrey became a well known personality in Nashville. At nineteen in 1971, Winfrey was offered another job at Nashville WTVF-TV (newschannel 5) as a news anchor. Oprah Winfrey became the first Afro- American women to work in that station (Kashyap and Srikanth 62). This was not the end for Winfrey, another offer from Baltimore WJZ-TV as a new anchor came her way and she would work for the Six O'clock news (Kashyap and Srikanth 62). This news anchor job required Winfrey to read off a script and she did not like that because she was more of an improvised kind of gal. Knowing that Winfrey could not read off a strict copy of the news, Winfrey quickly transferred to co-hosting a morning talk show called “People Are Talking (Kashyap and Srikanth 62).” This show became popular and Winfrey could easily talk about the different amount of subjects.
