During the Cold War the United States missed a lot of the analytical clues. These short comings were at all levels of the Intelligence field and the political figures as well. Some of the ideology on the American side was that the Soviets were incapable of getting their Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) within range of the United States while the communist factions in South America and the Caribbean were conducting revolutions against democratically elected governments. Operation Anadyr was designed to mislead Russians and foreigners all together about the destination of Russian military equipment. Operation Mongoose was initially designed to spread propaganda within the Cubans that if they revolted against Fidel Castro that it would initiate the second coming of Christ. An attempt the United States tried to use to play among the predominately religious island which was an unwarranted assumption on behalf of the United States. One of the first mistakes that the United States did was put Brigadier General Edward Lansdale in charge over this Cuban with his success against the Huk Rebellion in the Philippines. The issue was that B.G. Lansdale wanted to spread the propaganda and when the revolution started they were going to utilize a U.S. submarine to fill the dark night sky with illumination rounds and start clusters. This attempt cost the Americans millions of tax dollars to try and facilitate a plan with no backing or verification it would even happen, and the Attorney General signed off on the plan. It is important to note that the Bay of Pigs had already happened and so the Cubans were leary of the United States as the United States was of the Cuban rebels. The Bay of Pigs failure just pushed Castro toward socialization quicker and wanted the support of the Soviet Union to create a totalitarian dictatorship and establish a global adventure while the United States was licking …show more content…

The administration refused to train and utilize those individuals on the ground and know the terrain. Ignorance on behalf of politicians and high ranking military officers almost cost the United States a sum that can’t be added up. Fidel Castro wanted to nuke the United States and demanded the Russians retaliate if the Americans ever attack them. The only upside to this was that the Soviets were reluctant to initiate a nuclear war because the United States had nuclear missiles within the vicinity of Moscow, and they did not want to be the ones responsible for nuclear war. If the administration and generals would have backed the revolt and allowed the new revolutionaries to participate in the cleansing of the communist in Cuba, imagine what Cuba relations with the United States could be now. Ignorance and underestimation during war time leads to failure. The Soviets continually perfect their Maskirovka in areas like Czechoslavakia in 1968, the training of the North Vietnamese prior to the Tet offensive in 1968, and with the Egyptian forces prior to crossing the Suez Canal in 1973. It is not like they are just throwing things together, they are seasoned professionals and our own ignorance has blinded us. The Soviets have messed up but it is the small clues that usually crack the biggest holes, and allowing politicians and generals to dictate what goes on when they don’t have firsthand knowledge on
