The older generation of people in the play can be contrasted with the two young lovers. The lovers portray themselves as rash and impulsive who are filled deeply with emotions. Their elders, on the other hand, have experienced more in life and are probably wiser, thus they see things from a different angle. This leads to the elders not understanding the feelings of Romeo and Juliet, hence causing conflicts, misunderstandings and pain to arise. The older generation in this play refer to Romeo and Juliet's parents, the Nurse and Friar Lawrence.
I do agree that the older generation did play a major role in their children's destiny through their foolishness and good intentions, but not all blame is credited to them because Romeo and Juliet did contribute to their own tragedy. Fate also 'thwarted our intents'.
Montague and his wife show themselves to be caring and loving parents. After the fight on the streets of Verona, Benvolio is conversing with Montague and his wife about Romeo. Lady Montague knows her son has been troubled lately so she is glad 'he was not at this fray'. Montague has observed his son's distress, 'deep sighs', 'heavy son' and wants to relieve his despair, 'as willingly give cure as know'. From here, we can detect the good intentions of Romeo's parents, thus we know that whatever choice Romeo makes, they would have rendered their utmost support to him.
Older people are often thought to be wiser. Capulet admits that it is easy for 'men so old as we to keep the peace' which shows that the feud between their families can be resolved. However, it is clear that no effort has been put into ending their quarrel. This highlights the idiocy of the two men which leads to the tragedy because the young lovers could be happily married when the feud ended.
Capulet has good intentions when he finds a suitable match for his daughter. Paris is a handsome and gracious gentleman. It can be said though, that Capulet is acting out of pure selfishness because he knows Paris is a relative of the Prince which is why he, later in the play, insists that Juliet marry Paris. Lady Capulet is absurd in her description of Paris, 'a flower', 'to beautify him only lacks a cover'. Her attitude towards marriage and love is so artificial and she seems more interested in the wealth and nobility of Paris.
He of course thought that the only way to stop the battles between the two families was for Romeo and Juliet to get married. A few hours after the secret marriage between Romeo and Juliet, the ancient grudge. between the families, yet again, becomes an issue. Tybalt of the The Capulet family, acting out of spite, goes to start a fight with Romeo. Romeo of course knows that Tybalt is his kinsman now and avoids.
When there is a fight in the market place, Capulet rushes to fight for his honor, “my sword I say, old Montague is come...” Capulet denies Paris’ request to marry Juliet “ and too soon marred are those so early made,” acting for his own good because he wants Juliet to produce many offspring to carry on the Capulets bloodline, since she is his only surviving child. When at the ball Capulet demands Tybalt to let Romeo be,” content thee, gentle coz, let him alone,” but this just fuels Tybalts anger towards Romeo, which eventually ends up in Tybalt causing his own death. Capulet believes he is giving his child the best when he announces her engagement to Paris” she shall be married to this noble earl,” and believes Paris will make a good husband for Juliet. When Juliet refuses Capulet thinks it best to threaten her, “I will drag thee,” but this just makes Juliet turn to more drastic measures.
Lady and Lord Montague did not seem to pay much attention to Romeo and did not help him when he wa upset. Lady and Lord Capulet were horrible to Juliet. They only wanted her to marry Paris and use her for their gain. When she said that she did not want to marry him they proceeded to tell her to kill herself and that she was nothing to them. This is not how a parent should act towards their child. Her parents treatment made her try to find another way to get out of the marriage, which was faking her death. By faking her death because of her parents, she caused Romeo to kill himself and her to also. Friar Lawrence, a father figure to Romeo and advice giver to Juliet, could have prevented many of the factors that led to the outcome. The biggest action he could have taken was to have a better plan to get Juliet to be with Romeo after he was exiled. Juliet’s family was going to disown her if she did not marry Paris, so she could have just left. Instead of using an elaborate plan that could go wrong in so many ways, she could have easily went with Romeo to live in Mantua. Friar Lawrence also could have made the responsible decision to watch over them better. He married a thirteen year old and a sixteen year old from rival
Shakespeare has been know for many plays but one of his famous one is “Romeo and Juliet” Which has two teens from rivalling families who fell in love with each other but through misunderstandings and not well thought out plans by their mentors led to both Romeo and Juliet’s death by suicide. There were many ways that these “Star-crossed lovers” could avoided their fate with more thought out ideas and bring more people into their plans but untimely they died from plans from their mentors. What is the Relationship between Romeo and Juliet parents? Well Romeo’s relationship with his parents is they care for him very deeply. His mother was very relieved when he was not at the quarreled in the market. “O, where is Romeo?/Saw him today?/Right glad
If he had told his parents of his recent heartbreak, the Montague’s could have helped him resolve this issue. However, this does not happen and the parents end up being futile. While it is not the Montague’s fault that Romeo does not share his feelings with them, they are seen as ineffective because they do not help him with his problems.... ... middle of paper ...
Lady Capulet is very materialistic and she wants Juliet to gain wealth and status by marrying Paris ‘’Share all that he doth possess’’. In addition, because she got married at a young age, therefore she thinks it’s right for Juliet to be married at a young age ‘’I was likely your mother at just about your age’’. Moreover, she constantly urges Juliet to marry Paris without any sense of consideration for Juliet’s opinions or feelings, about the alliance of the marriage. Furthermore, this illustrates her cold attitude towards love and marriage as she only talks about Paris Social position and wealth.
Firstly, the Capulets and Montagues are at odds with each other. Members of each house and servants break into a sword fight, clashing with each other. Sampson says "Draw, if you be men. Gregory, remember thy swashing blow." (Act 1, Scene 1, Line 60). The feuding between the two families motivates Sampson to challenge the Capulets. Another example of how the two houses despise each other is what Romeo and his friends have to do to get into the Capulet feast. So they will not be recognized, Romeo, Mercutio, and Benvolio wear comic masks to hide their faces. Mercutio says, "Give me a case to put my visage in" (Act 1, Scene 4, Line 29). They do not want to be recognized because of the hatred between the two houses. Also, Romeo and Juliet are not supposed to be in love: "My only love sprung from my only hate! / Too early seen unknown, and known too late! / Prodigious birth of love it is to me, / That I must love a loathed enemy." says Juliet (Act 1, Scene 5, Lines 137-140). They are not supposed to love each other because it just so happens that each of their houses despise each other. It is unfortunate for Romeo and Juliet that their two families are against each other, because this means that they are not supposed to be married.
“I went from adolescence to senility, trying to bypass maturity”.-Retired american musician Tom Lehrer. Adolescents often show lack of maturity. Romeo and Juliet is a story about two kids who meet and and fall in love in the same day only to get married a few days later. Then juliet is supposed to marry another person named Paris after a day of being married to Romeo which then leads to all three of them being dead.In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses figurative language to display that Adolescents can make decisions that are not thought through.
From the beginning of the book, it is shown that Capulet is a stubborn old man who, as the leader of the Capulet’s, hates almost all Montagues with a burning passion. His hate makes him want Juliet to marry Paris to get closer with the Prince who is angry at the
Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet’s love for each other causes them to sacrifice their family, although their families have always had great gravity over the lovers. After the party where the lovers first meet, Juliet stands on her balcony and promises herself to Romeo: “be but sworn my love, and I’ll no longer be a Capulet” [2.2.37-39]. In this case, “sworn my love” can be rearranged to mean “my sworn love,” which refers to Romeo as the one that she will always love. For Juliet to become a Montague-- her family’s rivals-- would mean that she would give up many things she and her family value. In their fight over her refusal to marry Paris, Juliet’s parents threaten to not “acknowledge [her]” as their daughter, even if “[she]...hang, beg, starve, die in the streets” [4.1.192-193]. “Hanging,” “begging,” “starving,” “dying” are all very extreme ramifications that Juliet’s parents will give to her if she does not
Throughout the scene, we are given the impression that Capulet is kind-hearted, because he wants his daughter to marry for love and wants Paris to ‘woo her’ and work hard to ‘get her heart’, although we are still aware of his power to force Juliet into a marriage if necessary.... ... middle of paper ... ... Lord Capulet takes it for granted that his daughter will do what he tells her, saying ‘I will make a desperate tender / Of my child’s love’, taking responsibility away from Juliet and perhaps suggesting that she can’t decide for herself. Juliet’s parents appear understanding of her grief at first, but then plan the wedding in only 3 days, not giving her time to grieve.
We cannot lay the blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet exclusively at the doors of their parents, real or surrogate. It is as the Prince gravely states - all are punished. The feuding families have to bear the guilt equally for their lingering enmity. A tale of young love, with all its promise, has become a catalogue of death. In the end the city has lost five young citizens, cut down before their time. Society is the poorer for the losses. Those who survive share the blame for what has happened, since the whole city has had a hand, directly or indirectly, in the deaths. All are indeed punished.
Montague and his wife discuss Romeo’s strange behavior with Benvolio and ask him why he is acting that way. They find Romeo and have Benvolio talk to him. Benvolio advises him to forget Rosaline, but Romeo refuses.
In the play of Romeo and Juliet the main characters are a young teenage boy named Romeo and the only daughter of his family’s enemies, named Juliet. These two teenagers fall in love with one another but their love is strictly forbidden by fate. There are two families in the story; the Montagues and the Capulets, who had been rivals for many years. As two servants of the Romeo’s household walk, they see two servants of Juliet’s household biting their thumbs towards them. The two argue in public then fight. After a public fight between two servants and one kinsman from each family, the Prince of Verona tells both heads of the families that whoever disturbs the peace because of the feud between the families, will be punished by death. After
There is a parental love for Romeo as Lady and Lord Montague worry about where Romeo gets to. They worry about his welfare; they wish to know what he has been doing. So they ask Benvolio to find out as it is unlikely that Romeo will tell them, they want to help him.
