On Thursday, February 26, 2015 the music department of Oklahoma State University hosted a small concert series at 12:00 pm at the Edmund low library. There were many pieces composed by various composers and were performed by numerous people and ensemble at the concert such as OSU student Emma Jones, musicians Mikray Hasan, Charbel Yubaile, professors Sun Min Kim and Heather Lanners and the OSU trumpet ensemble. The program included Bruyères (Heather) from preludes, Book 2, Nocturne in b-flat minor, Op. 9, No. 1, Palmier d’étoiles (Star palm), L’ Egyptienne (The Egyptian), Jeux d’enfants (children’s games), Tuba Mirum Fanfare, Ava Maria, A Hoffnung Fanfare, First Essay, Op. 12, and Toccata and Fugue in d minor. I personally think this was my favorite performance out of the whole concert. The performers did multiple pieces from composer Georges Bizet’s La Poupée (The doll): Berceuse (lullaby), La Toupie (the top): Impromptu, petit mari, petit femme! (Playing house): Duo, and Les Chevaux de bois (the merry go round): Scherzo. The movements of all the pieces were so graceful and varied from slow to fast and they were so beautifully played. It sounded so peaceful you can fall asleep to it!
After all the piano pieces the trumpet ensemble came up and performed several pieces. The first performance they did was probably my favorite as a group. The Tuba Mirum Fanfare by Giuseppe Verdi was exceptional. I believe Verdi was a genius in creating this piece. The flow of notes and the steady movement was outstanding. I thoroughly enjoyed this concert from beginning to end. The opening piece, “String Quartet in F Major, K 590”, was both soothing and moving with an engaging theme that followed through the piece. The sudden stops and starts with changes in theme built the suspense and pulled the listener in to a jaunty gallop through the second section. Also the bass tones in the back ground seem to be slightly off kilter with the violins, providing a complex texture and harmony that provides depth and poignancy to the music.
The concert I attended was the Liszt, Prokofiev, and Dvořák concert at the Chicago Symphony Center. Emmanuel Krivine is a French conductor who conducted the orchestra to play Liszt’s compositions Les Préludes, Symphonic Poem No. 3. Next was Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 16 in the Andantino, Scherzo: Vivace, Moderato, Allegro tempestoso, the piano soloist was Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin who was accompanied by The Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Lastly was Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 in G Major, Op. 88 was performed by The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the four movements played was, Allegro con Brio, Adagio, Allegretto grazioso, and Allegro MA non troppo.
In conclusion, it was a very unique experience for me to attend this concert. It was my first time listening to music in a church. The music was wonderful and played brilliantly. I now realize how talented some of the women composers were throughout the history of music. The experience of listening to such wonderful music firsthand was an honor. I hope to attend one in the near future.
I was impressed by the range of the pieces that were performed as they were from 18th century classical symphony arrangements to contemporary techno pieces. However, the pieces that moved me most were Mozart’s Molto Allegro, Oaken Sky by Chris Rogerson and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. In hindsight, I am surprised that the two pieces from the Classical Era had such an impact on me. Perhaps, “classical” pieces were what I expected to hear at a Symphony. Oaken Sky evoked the most imagery for me and the conductor’s introduction of the piece was perhaps partly responsible for my ability to go from the earth to the sky in my mind’s eye. Oaken Sky was definitely a pleasant surprise and very pleasing to all of my senses. I was fully engaged in body, mind and soul with Rogerson’s composition. Cielito Lindo was interesting and the soloist really enhanced the piece with a stellar performance. Warehouse Medicine caused an incongruent stirring in me; perhaps I was not prepared for electronics to be added to the symphony. Ravel’s composition, Le Tombeau de Couperin, was a moving piece, but did not engage my senses, only my intellect. This work essentially left me feeling confused and although I appreciated the description of the dedication of the work by the composer, this was my least favorite piece. Overall, I was very impressed by the concert and I feel that the rest of the audience was also impressed. The expectations for the members of the Chamber Orchestra are high and those were met, but I feel that the expectations for the choral group were not as high. My expectations for the choir were not very high and they were immensely exceeded. The level of talent in that group was something that I was really not expecting at all.
The Laidlaw Preforming Arts Center’s spring concert for the Wind Ensemble was a great production to show the community the talents students have. Most of the pieces had a nationalism feel to them, but each one was much more different than the next. The student of this band did an exceptional job of conducting and playing during this concert.
The wonderful and magic sound of the strings made me feel happy and sad at the same time. I got surprised because I could not imagine I was going to listen to a Cuban bolero in this concert. I have never heard this song again since I left Cuba more than four years ago, and I remember it was my late grandmother´s favorite song. I can say that it touched me very deeply. The second piece I liked the most was Four for tango composed by Piazzolla.
I counted nineteen total performers with occasionally two others and a vocalist. Each performer was dressed in black pants and a black shirt except one who showed up late. He was wearing blue jeans and a sports coat and he definitely stood out from all the others. The performers related very well with the audience. One performance that stood out to me during the concert was a song called Sinfonia #3 by J. C. Bach (Wind Ensemble Concert program). The reason I enjoyed this song was because it was performed by nine saxophone players. I would say
The second piece, Paratum Cor Meum, was a much shorter piece with very few lyrics. It was interesting to hear a piece by Haydn, since we had discussed this composer in class. I was impressed by the choir members’ ability to remember words in another language, and I enjoyed the sounds of the piano accompaniment.
...re was very interesting transitions between the variation, for example, string section plays the variation from low to high, when they reach the highest note, the brass family takes over and continue with the scale and make it more higher. Tremolo style was used in this piece, which is a quick ups and downs stroke mode. The music were very soothing and attracted the audience. Lastly, they end the piece with the same variations that was played at the beginning.
Claude Debussy’s La Mer is a very beautiful piece of music. I thought the concert was wonderfully done. The music sent chills down my spine and I was really able to just sit there and listen. One thing I would have changed is having the live streaming video of the orchestra members displayed on screen behind the orchestra. I found it a little distracting because I would find myself watching the musician without listening to the music. I would have liked the concert more if it had been earlier in the day also. Concert music is so peaceful in my opinion, at least usually in the first movement, that I sometimes become drowsy. I think I could have had a better experience if the concert had been at an earlier time because I was already feeling tired when it started. After hearing the music, it only added to my drowsiness. I have only been to a few classical music concerts but I would have to say this one was my favorite by far. This concert was very nice and enjoyable. The performance overall was very good and easy to listen to. All the pieces they played except for the second one I really did like. I had never been to a chamber music concert before this one, but I really enjoyed the setting and how close you could be to the musicians. The concert overall was very good and I would go back to another one like it
Though, I knew it wouldn’t be the same as a concert, I still intended it to be similar. To my surprise, it was a completely different atmosphere. Overall, I did enjoy it, but there were a few things I disliked. I wasn’t a fan that the majority of the songs performed by Anthony Lovano’s band had no words. I didn’t like this, because that is my favorite part about the concert; getting to sing along with the band. When only two songs had words, I was confused how the band could ever interact with the audience to build their reputation. This being said, that is the second part I disliked; lack of participation with the audience. A member of the band would announce the song being played, with few explaining the meaning behind it and then they’d perform. I disliked this because I always find it more entertaining to interact with the performers. I think it’s exciting when they let you sing part of the song, while they play the music or when they just talk to you about their day in between songs. Again, I have only ever gone to a concert before, so this is all I was able to base it off
