Both authors Okita and Cisneros use the setting, the dialogue, and the character of their individual stories to develop the theme that there are stereotypes of against non-white Americans. Even though the both main characters are of different races, one girl being asian american and the other girl being mexican american, both stories girls show the unfair treatment of these characters because of their races. This mistreatment is is shown in very subtle way, but is definitely made clear through both stories. The setting of both stories mericans and in response to executive order 9066 were both set in american public places. The setting for mericans was set at a church and the setting for response to executive order 9066 was at an american school. The focus of the setting in mericans was religious and made a huge focus on the church were as executive order 9066 is not religious in any way. The dialogue explained very clearly what was going on and how the author felt. This was not true in the story mericans. The dialogue in mericans was very scrabbled and not to the point almost to the point of boredom. The dialogue in the story in response to executive order 9066 was clear and also showed what time period this story is set by one of the characters calling the main character a spy.
