Almost every single nation in our world today, the United States included, is extremely reliant on oil and how much of it we can obtain. Wars have been started between countries vying for control of this valuable natural resource. The United States as a whole has been trying to reduce its reliance on foreign oil and has had some success, especially with the discovery of the Bakken formation and projects like the Keystone Pipeline.
Like most authors that want to inform their audience about a specific topic, Kunstler educates us about the background story, within the first couple chapters, of how oil and fossil fuels became to be in the Industrial Age. He states that our society have basically reached a global peak, meaning that “we have extracted half of all the oil that has ever existed in the world – the half that was the easiest to get, the half that was most economically obtained, the half that was the highest quality and cheapest to refine” (p.24). The other half of the oil that has not been extracted lies under the most impossible places, such as the Arctic or deep under the ocean.

The United States has had several scares throughout its history in terms of oil, most turn out to be over exaggerations of a small event. However, these scares highlight a massive issue with the U.S. and that issue is the U.S.’s dependence on foreign oil. Why does it matter that our oil should come from over seas? In a healthy economy this probably wouldn’t be as relevant, but the U.S.’s economy is not exactly healthy at the moment. There are 4 things that I would like to address: what the problem is, how it affects us, what some solutions are, and what solutions I feel are best.
This book by Jason McClure is about as unbiased and all-inclusive you can get. The book appears to be targeted towards younger children and is formatted more like a picture book than a scientific article. Despite this, the book remains factual and accurate. Even though it is a Canadian book, it talks mostly about oil in general, not just oil in Canada. In particular, it covers the earth’s oil reserves and details of Canada's oil reserves, uses for oil, how (both normal crude and bitumen based) oil is extracted, and the role of governments, companies, and individuals in oil. The book is up to date as it was published in 2014. Among these oil rich states is Saudi Arabia, the region with the highest capacity for oil production out of the entire Middle East. From their remarkably high oil production, Saudi Arabia was able to gain considerable amounts of wealth and political significance. Oil plays a immense and vital role in our society as it is organized today. Oil represents much more than just one of the main energy sources used by mankind. The oil and petroleum industry plays an extremely important role in the economy and politics of our country. Petroleum products, besides being an important energy source, serve as feedstock for several consumer goods, which in turn plays a growing and relevant role in people’s lives.
