Why people bring down others with them? People are known to drag people down to the ground when the person being victimized is trying to excel the person dragging. In the novella “Of Mice And Men” by John Steinbeck, George and Lennie enter a predatory arena on the ranch in Soledad. The ranch has people pulling down others trying to escape a miserable life. They are exhibiting the “crabs in a bucket” phenomenon. This phenomenon is where people are pulling down others whoa re trying to get out of the bucket. The bucket can be a better life, better job, or a change in your daily routine. In Soledad, the main change everybody wants is to lead a better life. The quote is taken when he ridicules Lennie’s dream about the farm and the rabbits. ‘‘‘You’re nuts…I seen hundreds of men come by… Every damn one of ‘em’s got a piece of land in his head… never a God damn one of ‘em ever gets it.’” (Steinbeck 74). Crooks has seen many people come and go with the same dream, and none of them have ever achieved that. Crooks mocks Lennie about his dream due to his lost hope in them. His lost hope was due to the quantity of attempts the workers make and the success rate of their attempts. Crooks pulls everybody down due to the implied fact that he is trying to pull them down before they attempt and fail later realizing it was a false hope. The cause of his predatory nature was his loss in the dream coming true. He has seen it too many times he does not want history to repeat itself, thus leading him to pull people down before they pull themselves down. Curley becomes a predator due to his vendetta leading him to failure. This occurs when he fails to frighten Slim into being dominated by him. “‘ You keep outta this… You tried to throwa scare on Slim, an’ you couldn’t make it stick. Slim throwed a scare inta you…No big son-of-a-bitch is gonna laugh at me,” (62). Curley tries to scare Slim into obedience, however he ends up failing leading him to insulting and fighting Lennie. Curley becomes a predator Lennie causing him to take out his failure on him. His predation starts when he fails and turning into a fight with Lennie. His predation is caused by his failure. The failure is a trigger to become offensive and take out your failure by making a success by dominating someone. The failure is direct causation of negativity in Curley’s mind.
