Why people bring down others with them? People are known to drag people down to the ground when the person being victimized is trying to excel the person dragging. In the novella “Of Mice And Men” by John Steinbeck, George and Lennie enter a predatory arena on the ranch in Soledad. The ranch has people pulling down others trying to escape a miserable life. They are exhibiting the “crabs in a bucket” phenomenon. This phenomenon is where people are pulling down others whoa re trying to get out of the bucket. The quote is taken when he ridicules Lennie’s dream about the farm and the rabbits. ‘‘‘You’re nuts…I seen hundreds of men come by… Every damn one of ‘em’s got a piece of land in his head… never a God damn one of ‘em ever gets it.’” (Steinbeck 74). Crooks has seen many people come and go with the same dream, and none of them have ever achieved that. Crooks mocks Lennie about his dream due to his lost hope in them. His lost hope was due to the quantity of attempts the workers make and the success rate of their attempts. Crooks pulls everybody down due to the implied fact that he is trying to pull them down before they attempt and fail later realizing it was a false hope. The cause of his predatory nature was his loss in the dream coming true. He has seen it too many times he does not want history to repeat itself, thus leading him to pull people down before they pull themselves down. The loss of hope is a type of negative influence that has dominated Crooks. Curley becomes a predator due to his vendetta leading him to failure. This occurs when he fails to frighten Slim into being dominated by him. “‘ You keep outta this… You tried to throwa scare on Slim, an’ you couldn’t make it stick. Slim throwed a scare inta you…No big son-of-a-bitch is gonna laugh at me,” (62). Curley tries to scare Slim into obedience, however he ends up failing leading him to insulting and fighting Lennie. Curley becomes a predator Lennie causing him to take out his failure on him. His predation starts when he fails and turning into a fight with Lennie. His predation is caused by his failure. George and Lennie were lifelong friends and had varying personalities even from the start. Lennie thought about how his Aunt Clara said he should have been more like George. At the time when the story took place, the two men were travelling together, and had been for some time, working and then moving on to search for the next job they could find. They were like many other men in search for work, except it was rare for men to travel together. George felt a need to take care of Lennie because he was somewhat slow. George was an average man of the time. He was a good size, nice, but firm, and he had aspirations to be more than just a nomadic laborer. Lennie, on the other hand, had always been a little different. He was big, goofy, clumsy, but sweet. They were also both good workers. George was concerned with working and getting his money before they got into trouble and had to leave camp. Lennie was the one who normally started the trouble. He was a hard worker and lived to appease George, but he got distracted easily which angered George. George told about how they would own a house and a farm together and work for themselves. Lennie loved to hear the story and think about the possibilities, even though nobody knew if any of it was a possibility. George and Lennie's differences in part led to George's inclination to kill Lennie. Despite their dissimilarity, the two men needed each other probably more than they realized.

Lennie, Crooks and Candy are the only men remaining on the ranch. This excerpt characterizes Crooks and promotes the themes of loneliness and dreams. Crooks, the black stable buck, is isolated from the community of migrant workers because of his racial status. When Lennie goes into the barn to see his puppy, he and Crooks have a conversation. “'Why ain't you wanted?' Lennie asked. 'Cause I'm black. They play cards in there, but I can't play because I'm black'” (68). Lennie is too kind-hearted and intellectually slow to visualize the apparent racial boundary that sets Crooks aside from Lennie and the rest of the workers. In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck there are many events in the plot of the story that occur that prove that when man is cruel to man, some peoples lives are negatively affected. One instance in where this is proven true is when the men on the ranch and Curley's wife are cruel and discriminative against Crooks causing him to be the one to mourn. An example of how the men are discriminative towards Crooks is that he is forced to live in a shack away from the bunkhouse and also Crooks says that "They play cards in there, but I can't play because I'm black. They say I stink" and "I ain't wanted in the bunkhouse." An example of when Curley's Wife is critical towards Crooks is when she looks into his room to see what Lennie and Crooks are doing and then she states, shaking her head, that they left the weak ones behind. Also, she threatens to have Crooks hung because a black man should never talk to a white woman the way he just had. As a result of all of these discriminatory acts against him, Crooks feels unwanted and lonely because of his color and placement on the farm. Also those examples are part of the theme of the novel, people need to accept and understand those different from themselves, which also helps to prove the interpretation of the quote. Another example in this novel that proves that when man is cruel to man, the lives of people are negatively affected is when Curley picks on and tries to hurt Lennie. Curley chooses to fight Lennie because he thinks he won't fight back but because George gets angry and tells Lennie to fight back, he does. George being angry is not the only negative effect that Curley's teasing had on man, but also now Lennie is angry and in danger of getting in trouble and Curley himself gets hurt.
Many critics consider the novel, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck, as one of the greatest short works of fiction. I think this was a great novel with amazing detail. It has certain qualities and themes such as these: the importance of relationships, responsibility to others, the nature of home, respect for old age, the difference between right and wrong, and the evil of oppression and abuse. We can learn from these themes and see how we use it in our lives. By using examples from the book as well we can see how this happens more clearly.
When someone doesn’t achieve their dreams , they feel insecure which makes them have hatred towards people that are happy. In chapter 3, Curley comes into the bunkhouse to look for his wife and because of this, the men in the bunkhouse start laughing and make fun of him.
