Well known author Gretchen Rubin once said, “Keep in mind that to avoid loneliness, many people need both a social circle and an intimate attachment. Having just one of two may still leave you feeling lonely.” In the novel Of Mice And Men written during the Great Depression by author John Steinbeck loneliness is one of the main themes throughout the story. In this essay I will be writing about how loneliness affects three of the characters, George, Crooks, and Curley's unnamed wife. Even know Curley's wife is very beautiful she still finds herself lonely on the ranch. She isn't able to talk to the guys, and can’t connect emotionally with her own husband. In the second to last chapter Curley's wife finds Lennie in the barn. She later says in the barn to Lennie, “Why can't I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody, I get awful lonely.” (Pg86) Though she has Curley as a husband it seems that she doesn’t like him that much. She can’t talk to him on an …show more content…

He’s a smart, small man that works well and could possibly find a lady to settle down with. George still tho chooses to stay with Lennie, Lennie is also really hard to take care of as George says, “I could get along so easy and nice without you on my tail.” (Pg7) George knows tho that without Lennie he’d get lonely. He knows that without anybody his life would be even harder. George says “I want you to stay with me lennie.” (Pg 13) That proves to us that George needs lennie. George knows as a migrant worker companions are hard to get. Even know George has Lennie he still finds himself lonely. As the quote at the beginning of my essay says you need an intimate relationship too to not be lonely. That's what George is missing in his life. He doesn't have a girl to be with which makes him depressed, and lonely. Lennie also gets in the way of him getting a girl but george needs Lennie. George knows that it's better to stay with lennie
