Friendship In Of Mice and Men Friendship sometimes does not go as people have hoped or planned. Many times people find themselves in situations that they do not want to be in because of their friends. At the same time, they know that they need friendships because that is what formed them to be who they are today. These instances often occur in books as well, often time’s characters are in a tough situation because of their friends, or they are benefited because of the relationship that they have with another character. In the case of the book Of Mice and Men, the author John Steinbeck suggests that friendship is necessary in people’s lives, but it is also difficult. This theme portrayed during the book when Lennie and George stay together
Hesitating and questioning yourself is very normal in friendships, specifically with Lennie and George. George’s actions before he shoots Lennie are not very surprising, “George raised the gun and his hand shook, and he dropped his hand to the ground again” (105). George was very nervous and was hesitating before he shot Lennie he knew that it was the right thing to do, but Lennie was his closest friend, so it was very hard. George tried to show Lennie a brighter side and not have him notice that he was about to die he had him looking in to the distance across the river, trying to have him imagine his heaven (106). George knew that Lennie deserved to have a calm death, he also wanted to make sure Lennie knows that he is not mad at him, George wanted to reassure himself that Lennie would know, that he was shot for the right reasons. After George shoots Lennie, he stops and thinks about what he just did he throws the gun, sits down, and just thinks about what just happened (107). It was an odd situation and George had to make a very hard decision, and do some tough things. George was aware that the other men would have given Lennie a less peaceful death, so he decided to do it on his own. To finish off, shooting his close friend Lennie was a hard process, but George knew it was necessary to do.
In conclusion, in Of Mice and Men, the author John Steinbeck suggests that although friendship may be hard, people will always need it in their life. The theme is shown when George and Lennie are both there for each other while traveling , when George goes through the struggle of making sure Lennie is safe, and when Gearge shoots Lennie. George and Lennie struggle many times with friendship, but they both know they need it in their
